I've made the executive decision that I won't wait until everything is absolutely perfect with this project. This has been in the works for way too long :)

I started out with your typical 223 Valmet Hunter. All changes are completely reversible - the original barrel assembly is stashed away. I'm going for a modern AK-103ish tacticool look...

(Do let me know if tinypic is showing anything else but a gun/part)

Had Herron Arms do the caliber conversion. The AK bolt had to be modified slightly to clear the receiver - you can see where the bolt was relieved further. That cut on the side of the Valmet bolt seems to have a more trapezoidal profile unlike the square one of the AK bolts.

The gas block is from a Valmet M71 placed at the normal AK position. I might replace it with an AK-103 later, not sure.

Front sight is AK-47. Again, might replace with an AK-103. Still kinda looking at what the Russians do with the AK-12.

The muzzle cap is the earliest AK-47 version as well, threaded. There will be a sleeve going over the barrel between the muzzle and the cap that will look like an AK-103 muzzle brake.

The foregrip is a Midwest Industries Galil foregrip (no fitting required)

The trigger is an AKM trigger.

The grip adapter is a Saiga grip adapter from R&R works (a lot of fitting and cutting - I might 3d print an adapter for the grip and put a DD grip with the integrated trigger guard on) Still needs to be painted.

Regular A2 AR grip

Folding stock adapter from ACE. The spacer is 3d printed and is not quite a perfect fit, waiting for the next prototype.

Here it is with a 5rd AK pattern mag. No modification to the magwell was required, unlike what usually needs to be done to a .308 receiver.

AR/Galil magwell adapter from Canis design group (major fitting required) so I can use those 10rd XCR mags until someone gets us AK pattern pistol mags :)

Thanks!

I prefer the AR grip - fits my hand better. I have long fingers and wide palms, relatively thin - I find the standard A2 grip is better for me than the magpul which I tried too. I often find that standard pistol grips as they come from the manufacturer (e.g. glock, beretta) are better for me than the customized grips. Pachmayr feel horrible... thus the decision to go with a basic AR grip.

That makes sense - cool man. The better question... How's does it shoot? :)

Very cool. I have an M78 in 5.56 I was going to send in soon to have shortened to the minimum NR length, but I may talk to Herron about a caliber conversion instead. I'd really rather my gun was 7.62x39. Can I ask what the caliber conversion set you back? Feel free to PM me if you'd prefer not to talk about costs here.

The cost was just a tiny bit under 1500. That was just the rebarrelling with the gas block and muzzle nut provided by me, bolt fitting and cerakote of the stainless barrel. Probably more now.

No idea how it shoots yet, I'll take it out sometime this month to see how long the 3d printed spacer will last (probably not long)

Thanks for the info. I think I'm going to price out a caliber switch for my M78 with Herron. :)

It's been a while but some recent developments on the Valmet front prompted me to work on the project some more. I have been unhappy with the AR stock - it just makes no sense to have the tube when it's not functional. Then Magpul came out with their zhukov stock for the Yugo platform.

The Yugo AK uses a similar 1 bolt mounting for their stock, so it gave me the idea to try it and whatever empty space remained - fill it with an adapter. This way there's no need to #### around with extra screws and the stock is bolted directly to the receiver.

Also finished a fake AKM brake that goes over the end of the barrel and is held in place with the AK barrel nut.

Overall I like this better. I'd still like to make my spacer a little thinner and I'll get there with the next prototype. the fake AKM brake is perfect.
