Some people in the black rifle crowd can legally build their own lower receiver and have it registered.
I was wondering if someone could build a valmet receiver in canada and be considered a valmet receiver not an AK

What are

I know that all AK variants are prohibited but not the valmet m76/78 (its not even restricted) is that a loophole or is there a big difference between these two

Im sure it will come cheaper to build M76 with ak parts than buying an actual valmet in canada...but i dont want to do illegal stuff too

The Valmet you are referring to is non-restricted by name only. Meaning, only Valmet can manufacture or give permission to manufacture under licence that exact particular firearm. Not gonna happen as Valmet doesn't produce that gun anymore. Not to mention they went belly up in'99.

This has been gone over a few times on here. Valmet is the manufacturer, not the type of firearm. Valmet manufactured M78's were specifically excluded from the prohibition by manufacturer name and manufacturer model. For example you can't throw a hunk of metal in a mill and make a "Springfield" M1 Garand. You can make a Garand, but the manufacturer won't be Springfield, the manufacturer will be you. This is what a few of the AR guys have done. It is their brand manufacturered AR, and it is still considered an AR variant and thus still restricted regardless of barrel length.

The Valmet name is owned by someone else now, and supposedly they have no interest in producing firearms, selling the manufacturing rights, etc. And even if someone was to legally aquire Valmet and start producing canadian AK's, how long do you think it would be before the rcmp found some excuse to clamp down on that?

As others have said, the answer to your question is "No".

Secondly, Valmet M76 IS prohibited. Its the M78 and Hunter (also known as M88) that are non-restricted.

Interestingly, the receiver of a .308 Hunter (non-restricted) is nearly identical to the receiver of a .308 M76 (which is prohib). The receiver is the actual firearm.

Not to mention they went belly up in'99.

Are you sure about this? I was under the impression that the firearms division of Valmet (along with all the patents) was bought out by Sako. Sako is owned by Beretta, i believe?
The company "Valmet" still exists and manufactures tractors and other heavy equipment.

The old Valmet merged with Rauma in 1999 and became the Metso Corporation. I think the weapons side of things was just retired and they now make wood pulp and paper processing equipment.

Would be cool to secure the manufacturing and branding rights for the Valmet name in the Canadian market and set up shop to make a proper "Valmet M78".

Valtion Metallitehtaat's firearms division went to Sako in 1996. Metso picked up the paper making and automotive . The tractor and diesel engines went to Partek,Kone, and finally AGCO. The forestry end(only one licensed by Metso to use the Valmet name) went to Komatsu.

very interesting info guys. I just wish those who owned Valmet rifles would loosen up a little and let someone else enjoy it...its hard to enjoy a $1000 rifle when you pay six thousand dollars for it. On a side note, did anyone else notice the AK reciever plates that fabsports was selling? were those just for prohib guys or what? Or maybe for building a dewat with a parts kit? It just seemed a bit strange that something like that would be offered in Canada, but Im sure Fabrice had good reason

If you completed it, you'd definitely have a prohib on your hands.

It looks like a flat piece of metal which probably falls into the "80% complete lower" category. No desire to own it other than perhaps to frame on a wall as an oddball art piece. It's cheap enough.

Where did you get your numbers from? $1000? $6000?
An m78 in x39 would MAYBE fetch 6k if a buyer was desperate. Even if you did find it in the States, would cost you about 3k, and you probably wouldn't be able to export it.
Valmets sell for about twice as much in Canada as they do in US, which is reasonable considering how rare and hard to export these rifles are.
A $250 Kel-Tec gun that is currently being manufactured is being sold for $675. Now THATS a rip off.

As for your comment about Valmet owners "loosening up"... Well.. I wish the the Ferrari owners loosened up also, and let other people enjoy them. I wouldnt mind one for 10k.

 your comparing a CZ 858 to A Valmet 78 :onCrack:
yea really.. comparing a CZ 858 to a Valmet 78 is like comparing Rosie O'donnell to Jessica Alba

Didnt someone say the Valmets sold for about $1000? I thought that was the going rate when they were available. As for the $6000, I appolagize, I made a mistake. It was an EE ad for $6100 for a used rifle missing parts. A Ferrari is an expensive car, a Valmet is not an expensive rifle.

What something sold for 20 years ago has nothing to do with what its worth today.
Valmets are VERY expensive rifles. They are the Rolls-Royce of AK variants. There are Valmets that sell for 7-8 thousand dollars in US. Even the most common models usually cost 3-4 times more than your typical AK.
Their unique legal status in Canada makes them even more desirable.

Almost every single thread about Valmets on these boards has some kid who never shot or even saw one in person call them a "novelty" or compare them to CZ. It used to annoy me, but then i got used to it.

denis judging by your avatar you are one of those 'tight' Valment owners, once I get a sustainable income and can justify spending 6gs on one rifle that i cant shoot that often i will join the club, a Valment is honestly the gun i want the most , and i think they will only go up in price.
