Hi there.
I was wondering if any gracious owners of the Valmet m78 or hunter etc, to please take the stock off, and take a couple pictures showing the connection point between the wood and the receiver..
I have a plan for something but need to know how the stock connects before considering anything!

thanks so much, take care

The Valmet Hunter (M88) and the M78 basically share the same receiver - as far as the stock mounting goes.

Most valmets have interchangable parts. To your luck the M88 and M78 share many common parts.

Stock/Lug Info:
-Mounting lug and angle should be the same from the stamped (76/78) to the machined (76/78/88).
-Watch for the cuts (called 'side cuts', 'lightening cuts', ect) on the machined 308 receivers. These cuts make these receivers unique and tough to match parts to. You will ahve to add a small plate that wraps arround the lug and fills these cuts. This may create a slight increase to the length of trigger pull. Clearly visible on the pics above.
-If you order a stock (ace, ect) for the M76/M78/M88 they will be interchangable!!! and should be close .. not 100% for the M62/M71.

Personally if I were to rework a Valmet I would use a Galil folding stock (ace) and create/fab a small plate that would flush-fit the side cuts of the receiver. The Valmet Hunter (M88) - Galil conversion if done right looks close to a Galil. Since IWI/IMI purchased Valmets M62 manufacturing equipment to make the Galil it is a close fit.... not 100 % - may require tinkering. Making a M76 from a Hunter is easy but the parts are hard to find and costly....

Sorry to clarify,
I have a PSL stock (Dragunov type) and a POSP and am trying to figure out what to base the whole thing on...
since the valmet receivers sure look the part, I just wanted to check if the stock would work!
thanks so much, take care

all hunters and 308 M78 are milled recievers. the 223 and 7.62x39 M78's are stamped.

makes a major differance in what you want.

..... My M78 is stamped and in .308...... if you would like pics..... .308 stamped are not as common as machined and were mostly made to be M83s there were some that made it out as M78s.

The correction is : All 308 Hunters and most 308 M78s are milled. There are some stamped M78s in 308. The M83s are all stamped... I have never seen one that is machined - There may be an exception somewhere, but it might be a conversion....

Stock Fit

I found these and remembered this thread so I thought that I would add them in......

You can clearly see the NEED for the additional plate to fill in the side cuts on the receiver....

If Memory Serves correctly (I may be wrong) but that is a Galil Folder that was converted for an M76.

hey,

HFP75, is that gun from California? cuz theres no pistol grip on it.

It's a Valmet Hunter which does not have a pistol grip.

Here's a similar stock on a Valmet M76 .308. Personally in this configuration I don't find the side cuts in the receiver to be a big deal. I think the pistol grip balances it a little. YMMV

Modified R4 stock on top, modified Galil on bottom.

I have been looking for one in 7.63x39 for quite some time now. Shot in the dark, anybody have one they are willing to part with?:D

M76's, M71's and M62's are prohibs.

M78's and Hunter's are non-restricted.

You certainly would not want to shoot the Hunter / folder with no pistol grip. The fellow who originally took the pic was just showing how the adaptor installed on the Hunter.
