It depends on the gun. A revolver with the correct barrel is no different than the gun that was barreled Non prohib (they all start with the same frame and the different barrels are just pulled off a rack at assembly). Personally if that was the case I would still go with the store bought barrel because first off, you have to buy the prohib, then you have to buy the barrel, then you have to go thru the hassel of re registering it. To do it originally will cost more than buying a new gun to begin with. And secondly there are too many amateur gunsmiths, so unless I know who the source is I generally pass. The other scenario is guns that don't come in a restricted length at all. They are also fairly expensive to originally convert, and in a lot of these conversions, reliability is often an issue. It all boils down to just how much you want it and how much you feel you want to pay to get it. I have 12/6 so for me it's a non issue, but prices for some of the more desireable prohibs are actually as much or more than if they were non prohib. There was a ppks in 22 lr on the EE the other day for 1k, and I'll bet it's gone. I have a snub 629 and snub 624, that I know I can pretty much name my price. The real deal is in anything 38 special, simply because thethe same gun is available in both 12/6 and non 12/6. I wouldn't pay more than 250 for any 38, unless it was new and unfired
