I have a line on a Breda Garand. I need one like I need another hole in my head, but I'm feeling a bit flush after I figgured out my tax return (I always like to spend my money before I get it).

It's a shooter, it's been shot a bunch (current owners own statement), but it is in very serviceable shape. I can see a few dents and dings in the wood, no rust, but shows some wear.

I don't know anything about it other than it looks and feels just like a bunch of other garands I have seen. I have seen them from $800 to $1400 and I didn't buy them either......

What should a fella expect to pay for something like this? I mean really...... not the prices one sees in the EE either....... I mean COME ON!!!!......

inflated...

the only reason that garands are going for more than say $600 is because people are willing to pay an inflated price .... if everyone would stop buying them for way more than they are worth the price would go back to where it should be. $500 bucks is about right.

dont get me wrong :
they are a great rifle, i have owned 4 of them and my dad carried one in the pacific. i will get another but i'm sure as H**L not paying a grand for one.

That's exactly what it will take, someone to start bringing containers full of Garand's for the price to come back to reality, just like what happened to the SKS. Before all the Russian SKS's flooded the market I was offered $450 for my Russian, now I be lucky to sell it for $150.

Thats also why I don't have an SKS....... I have 3 crates of ammo (a deal I just couldn't refuse).

I just can't seem to find a used one for less than $100...... That is all I think they are worth IMHO....

Back to the original topic.

I offered the fella $750 for it and he said "try $1400" I said you're nutz.

Just 4 months ago, I walked away from a straight from arsenal #'s matching post WW2 (with all the arsenal docs from US assembly, US arsenal, Dutch arsenal and then final sales recipt) the guy wanted $1250. I offered that guy $1000...... He also laughed at me......

Hmmmm, maybe it's me.....

M1 Garands are not SKS's. I wouldn't say that the day of cheap Garands isn't going to come again. However, if it does, it isn't only going to be Garands that are cheap. I didn't pay much for the ones I own, but most other rifles were "cheap" at the time.
 
Itallian M1's are probably the best ever made....latest drawing numbers, built in peace time, make for some great shooters. That said, no real collector value as didnt see any wars, and not US made.
For a beat up, well shot offering, $600 would be reasonable in this market as you can probably get a US one for around that price. Most of the itallian versions we got were in great shape, so a beat up one should be low on the desire list.


******EDIT, now if it's one of those newly built 7.62x51 versions that TSE brought in, they sold them for $1400 I believe.

I think guys are dreaming if they think Garand's will be under 600.00 again. I typically pay 500-650 for a real beater, 700-850 for a shooter and anything decent is 900 and up depending...

Unless the Korean Garand's came here instead of the US (doubtful) and the market was temporary flush with examples maybe for about a week, then collectors will begin buying them 10 at a time driving up the price.

I just picked up a shooter grade on the weekend, 775 plus taxes brought it up to over 900.00.

Look at what is happening to prices in the US, and there are far less here.

Another factor is the huge interest in all things WW2 US gear and weapons...
 
The Garands made by Breda and Beretta were made to an excellent quality line and tend to be more lightly used than the US surplus rifles, most of which were rebuilt one or more times. They are a good chice for a shooter, rather than a collector's piece.

One in nice shape should go for $800- $1000 with a bit more of a premium for a rifle with all Breda or Beretta parts.

They aren't making any more of these, and in spite of all the hopeful speculation about Korean surplus Garands, there are no more import surges anywhere on the horizon.
 
Got a Springfield Garand SN 299###. 1941 action with a 1943 barrel. Got lucky a few years back when I picked it up, I wouldn't sell it for $1400. Not that it would be worth that but I just don't want to part with that history. If I could only find out the story for it. Who was it issued to and where did it fight. It's part of the dream of a WWII era Garand.
