As per my thread in the general discussion forum, I'm trying to help a friend value and maybe dispose of some guns. I'd like to get an idea of the value of two shotguns. I might buy them myself, but if not, we`ll have the owner create an account and list them.

First one is a Winchester Model 12, 12 gauge. This one is well used and I'd say in poor condition. Barrel is marked 'stainless steel' but appears almost to have been painted at some time, although it could be old bluing. Much is scrapped and scratched. The receiver is showing a lot of corrosion spots. Bore looks good. I didn't measure it, but would guess the barrel length is about 28."

Second one is a Winchester Model 42 pump .410 gauge 3" in fairly good shape. There is some light freckling on the receiver, but doesn't show in the pictures.

The stainless barrel is unusual. That gun, although in bad shape and fairly plain, could be worth a few bucks. $600 maybe? The 42 is plain but solid. They fetch big bucks stateside, but here...800$ maybe more.

As far as I am concerned the Model 12 maybe $200. I certainly would not pay more. The 42 has the value. $600 and up...

There are more than one value for a gun... the price someone would pay if they are looking for that model for themselves... the price someone would pay so they could sell it and make a profit...the price someone would ask for a quick sale... the price someone would ask if they didn't really want to sell it soon...

The model 12 with the stainless barrel is uncommon. The barrels were painted from the factory as stainless can't be blued. Rough shape but may interest a dyed in the wool model 12 guy, certainly more than a $200 gun. The model 42 is a $1000 to $1200 gun in my opinion. Others may have a different idea of value.

Condition is everything when it comes to price and as seen here condition is poor on the 12 ga andFair on the 42 $150 on the 12 ga as for the 42 it's not a $1.200.00 gun as stated there are 90% + guns on EE that are not selling its a standard field grade gun desirable as a shooter retail price would be $650-$750

Winchester introduced Stainless Steel barrels in the Model 12 in 1926 and discontinued them in 1930. The Japanned black finish came off blotchy with wear and was unpopular with shooters. This gun appears to have a history of owners believing the entire gun was stainless and required no rust prevention. Still this is the first I have ever seen in a lifetime of closely looking at models 12. Would be kinda cool to own but the cool wears off at about 250.00. The 42 is always valuable but the gauge is not my first choice for hunting by far. ( I am not an expert, info sourced from "The Winchester Model 12" by Madis, Pub. Art and Reference House)

On this gun, barrel, trigger guard, receiver, and many other parts are made of stainless steel. A few minor parts are of standard steel.

If true, the stainless model 12s should require much less attention than a blued steel gun after use in wet weather. I am seeking opinions from others with more expertise than I if there were in fact stainless guns catalogued in addition to stainless barrels offered as an option.

I've owned a bunch of Model 12's and two 42's ... and handled literally, hundreds more, including skeet, trap, pigeon
and custom shop guns, some factory engraved, some not.

The 12 gauge to me would represents a "parts gun" at best ... maybe $ 200.
The Model 42, $800 - $850.

Only the barrel was stainless...the rest of the gun rusted...like in the pictures.
