value of a pre-64 winchester 94 30-30

The condition is not great, I certainly would not pay more than $400 and hope to sell it for $500 or so. It's just a shooter...

It would be worth less if it was refinished or drilled for a scope. Just about anything you may do to this will reduce it's value.
 
I don't know where some of these price estimates are coming from? A decent 1953 vintage 94 carbine in similar condition is worth $400-$500 and a model 64 is worth more, only 60 odd thousand made from the 1930's until it was discontinued. In my opinion the gun is worth around $750 and this ain't my first rodeo. If I were buying it to resell I would offer $450 or so.

The model 64 was a replacement for the model 55. In 1924 the model 55 was introduced as a replacement for the 94 rifle(26 inch barrel)The 64 action is the same as the model 94 but the pistol grip stock and 24 inch barrel make it unique. The 64 is one of the best stocked and balanced woods rifles ever made, just handle one and you will see. It is not "rare" but is much less common than a run of the mill 94.
 
I to have wondered why the Model 94 carbines ,of which a lot of them are out there ,are going up so fast in cost, while the Model 64 of which there were far fewer made, are not increasing much if any in value compared to the Model 94 carbine.I guess ,like in the time when the two were both available ,the Model 94 carbine was more popular ,so it goes in the collector world, the Model 94 carbine is still more popular.

$500 is the top end for a Pre 64 carbine. This is not a top end Model 64, by a long shot. It would sit on the EE for months at $750 given it's condition. $750 is where 94 Rifles, in my mind the more desirable configuration, are rightly priced.

One thing to check carefully before you buy is the condition of the muzzle.
Quite often if a person is not too careful pushing a cleaning rod in from the muzzle the barrel crown can be dinged which so frequently happens to leverguns.
Having said that, I have had three Mod.64s all of which were very accurate and dependable.
 
One mans garbage is another mans treasure. I wouldn't give $100 for it but then I don't collect old Winchesters. At the prices being mentioned I am betting the gun will take a long time to resell.
