Value of an Auto 5 /16 gauge?

Well when you have a price figured out, please let me know, I have a friend who collects 16s and does not yet ahave an Auto.

Most Auto 5s I have seen do have cracked forends, just part of being an Auto 5, they are of course worth more without the crack.

Not sure where you are buying ammo but I've never seen a store where 16 gauge was easier to find than 20.
Actually I said that sometimes it's easier to find than 20ga. I live in SW Ontario. There are 5 CT's within 15 k of me all but 2 carry 16 ga. None of them carry 28 ga and only 1 had .410. Of the two gunshops that are in my area both have a good selection of 16 ga. I guess it all depends on where you live and the demand.

We're in the same part of the province. No argument on 16 versus 28 or .410 but if there is more 16 than 20 it means that the demand for 20 is so great the store can't keep up.

My mistake I found the 20 ga. in another section of the store. Right next to the ladies frilly things ;)

True 16 bore shooters will find ammo. We seek it out like the Holy Grail. Having said that Canadian Tire and my local gun shops ALL stock 16 bore game loads and steel shot. (Federal) There are still alot of old timers up here hunting to put food on the table and the 16 they bought back in the good old days still works...... (Cooey 84's CIL 402's etc etc)

cheers Darryl

I had a chat with a fellow gunnut today about the chambre lengths of Belgian Brownings and he said the Europeans state their shotgun cartridge lengths unfired whereas the N. American use the fired lengths. This would explain why the barrel on this Auto 5 says both 2 3/4" and 63.5mm(2 1/2").

I stand corrected on that one as the sixteen gauge was introduced as a 2 and a half inch shell way back when. There is some confusion as to the serial number dating and the barrel marks on your shotgun that lead me to believe it is not the original barrel???? browning changed the stamping of the chambering to 2 3/4-65.5mm after world war two for guns sold in the us where there was a greater supply of 2 and three quarter inch ammo. the 65.5 mm just denotes that you can shoot 2 and a half inch shells. Because I know you have a week off :D :D just for your reading pleasures check out http://16ga.com and do a search on the auto five. There are links to check the year of manuafacture against your serial number as well as various opinions of value. form what I read it seams that serial numbers starting with Y were for the ueropean market with only two found in the us to date. Lead shot only for sure in that full choke as well. It appears that it may be worth more if you export it. I'll be in touch.

The stamping on your barrel leads me to believe it was manuafactured in the late 50s.
