Value of an M1 Garand

Hey guys

I have a friend who inherited an M1 Garand who is looking to sell it and asked me what it is worth. I checked the EE but that was full of WTB posts. Since I have no clue I figured Id ask.

Not sure what year it was built but He believes it was used in WWII. The rifle is in good condition and shoots well. Also comes with a bayonet.

Any idea what this gun is worth?
 
$300 to thousands, depending.
How much is a Ford F150 worth?
A lot more information would be helpful.

Solid used clean M-1s seem to be selling in the $800 range these days.
 
Condition and originality are what sets the price. You would need to furnish more details and close-up pics would be helpful. Some helpful details would include:
-maker and s/n (on heel of receiver behind rear sight)
-barrel markings/date
-markings on op rod/trigger housing
-bore condition/presence of pitting
-condition of metal finish (worn/rusted/pitted)
-stocks(split/gouged/any markings)

It's not worth much of anything, have him send it to me and I'll dispose of it for him. Heck I'll even pay for shipping.

You can tell the date of manufacture of a Garand by the serial number. I can't find my original reference, but this site appears to be a correct reference. (also has drawing numbers, see below) http://myplace.frontier.com/~aleccorapinski/id11.html

From the date, you then compare all of the "drawing numbers." Each of the parts on the rifle is identified with a "drawing number." Think of it as a model number; if there is a part which bears a drawing number later than the rifle's manufacture date, then it would be a good bet that the part has been replaced at some point. http://battlerifle0.tripod.com/index.html

But Seriously, as long as the metal has a good amount of finish, no cracks on the stock and handguards and a the bore is shiny with strong rifling it will be an easy sell.
