A friend of mine has asked me to appraise this Winchester 490 she received. It has no sentimental or familial value to her, and she would like to sell it off to make space and fund other purchases. It does have a star on the serial, so it was factory repaired to cure the defect. I am curious what the gun may be worth.

These are the images she provided me with.

$50 shipped to me? lol. Seriously, I do not know, but it is a very nice looking gun. I'm sur someone here would be proud to own that, I know I would.

After looking at the pictures again, is that as original? If so, it appears to have been very well kept.

Man does that thing look like a win 100.
It has the checkering on the forearm and tang cheeks like the pre-64 100s rather than the embossed basket weave pattern of the post-64s.
Hope it's more accurate than the typical win 100.

The $400 mark is about the top end for these even in mint condition which that appears to be from the pictures. I had one a year or so ago in mint condition and had a hard time getting $350 for it so also depends if anyone is looking for one.

Apparently these were produced from 1974 - 1977. About 33,000 made. all in Canada at the Cobourg Ontario factory.

Ironically the winchester model 100 it resembled was discontinued in 1973.
They probably used left over winchester 100 stock blanks to make the 490s.
The only difference is the inletting for the action & barrel.
