My uncle has a sporterized german made mauser from the second boar war. he took it too a local shop and the owner only offered him only $50 for it.

I don't know a lot about boar war rifles, but that number sounds very low, espically when a sporter enfield goes for $100-150.

I don't have any pictures of it, but i've held it and it's in very nice shape. solid bolt, good bore ( oh a pun! ;)) and the wood and barrel are in good condition.

anyone have any idea of what it may be worth?

Well a sporterised mauser isn't anything special, boer war or not, and the shop has to make a profit on the weapon.

It could have been turned into a sporter just before the boer war which would make it "legit" in my opinion. Does the mauser have any Orange free state markings on it or any stock carvings...etc ? Boer rifles usually stayed with the owner for a long time so they became quite attached to their firearms.

On that note, what type of rifle is it ? Are you able to describe any markings, words...etc on the receiver or on the rifle itself so we can determine the make of model ?

Pictures would be great in this area too.

sorry, i dont have many more detials at this time. i was hoping to get a best and worst case value

There was a Mauser used in the Boer War called the Plezier or sporting Mauser. There were very few made (under 2000). If your Gun is one of those you have hit the jackpot. Does it have an octagon barrel?

Does a Boer War Lee Enfield cavalry carbine count? I have one with rather faint markings of the Orange Vrei Statts Artillerie carved into the buttstock. I assume that the brits tried to erase the marks after it was recaptured.

It is tough to give you a reasonable value as the overall condition, originality, make of model, and any extras (carvings in the stock by the Boers for instance) all affect the value.

It could also be a 1890s era Mauser rifle used by the Boers and later turned into a sporter well after the conclusion of the second Boer war by an amateur firearm user. In this case, any markings on the wood and metal may have been lost and there wouldn't be much left in the value except parts.

Sadly, without a more thorough description of the rifle, it is very difficult to assign a rough dollar value.

Unfortunately yes, I would love to have it, any Enfiled carbine full wood counts, Boer War to me all the more, can be pricey under the correct conditions. A full wood Mauser, remember only 30,000 made are not cheap, sporterized, aaaah, not as much, $50.00 does seem low. Put in CGN with photos.

It was common for the Boer's to carve a sweetheart's name or date of enlistment into the stock.........should all be 93 mausers along with some 6.5x55 Krags.I have a large article on the weapons used purchased abroad............Harold

Although I haven't had a chance to create a formal Knowledge Library entry for it, here's a piece from my collection …

1896 Boer Mauser Rifle Serial # B7772 (click here)http://imageevent.com/badgerdog/germanservicerifles/1896boermauserrifleserialb7772

"One of the first 20,000 rifles delivered in 1896 to Z.A.R.
Serial number ranges were A1 - A10000 & B1 - B10000"

"All matching numbers except cleaning rod and un-numbered bolt"
"Vet bring back and was originally part of CMI collection"

I'm not sure what it's worth today either ...

Doug

That rifle would be worth mucho $$ if it could be proven to have been owned personally by "Oinkle" Paul Kruger!

This is the type of marking you'd be looking for.
