value of colt 70 series

hey guys just wondering if there is any 1911 buffs out there, to help me out

im looking at a 1911 model 70 commander, unfired , $500

i dont know when the guy bought it but im thinking in the 80s.
im going to go look at it in april and see if i want to buy it but i dont know a lot about 1911s.
 
Tell him I'll give him $501 and he won't have to wait until April! Oh and by the way, I'm the ONLY 1911 buff on this forum so don't listen to anyone else.
Seriously I have paid $850 for a used one.

well i have to wait till april because he is one of those guys that has about 60 guns that he bought 25 to 40 years ago so he has to dig it out. but my dad bought a shotgun from him and is picking it up in april.

he just sold 5 unfired winchester model 70s that he bought in the late 60s
 
i think if i buy this gun it might be a keeper, i dont like selling guns.

There's two different kinds of Colt 'commanders' from that era.

There's the "combat commander" [steel frame] and "lightweight commander" [aluminum frame]. Generally, a combat commander is more desireable. Personally, I prefer them as well.

Anyway, if it's a Series 70, and in "as new/unfired" condition then $500 is a steal. I'd expect to pay ~ $750-$850 for an "excellent conditon" Colt combat commander. A tad less for the lightweight model.

ready for a shock???- try about 200 - they quite reasonable until the series 80 showed up, and then they became DESIREABLE- mostly b/c of that stupid firing pin lock- mine was 149, but that was 72 or 3, blued, and had the collet bushing- trying to find one that hasn't been modified is a DIFFERENT story
 
I don't think Colt ever used the Series 70 nomenclature for Commanders, as they never had the collett barrel bushing. At any rate, it seems that the pre-Series 80 Colts have offered a pretty decent return on compared to a lot of more conventional investments.

For $500, I'll take two!
 
Speaking of series 70 Colts - what value for a Mk IV Gold Cup ? Still in the box but has been fired approx. 100 rounds. Pistol appears new, I'm not a pistol guy but when I saw this one it was beautiful.
 
so i have decided that id be stupid not buy this gun , even just to flip it so if it shows up on the EE for $750 in april dont be surprised. but it wont be unfired cuz i think guns want to be shot so im going to at least shoot a box of .45 through it
