Guy I know took it out of the box today. It is the long barrel musket, and has been sitting on a shelf for 40 years. Has three bad spots of rust that should clean up with some oil and 000 steel wool, but will probably leave pitting behind.

I always wondered why Winchester packed these guns in plastic foam, which we know traps moisture. Anyway, would appreciate you guys who know giving him an idea of value. He knows it is not a $3000 gun! :D

Mp or RCMP prefix ? one was originally civilian issue/purchase, other series initially only available to serving RCMP members. Winchester site will give you details of #s of each made etc. Sold originally for under $200...($147.00 if memory serves.)

Have had dozens of these. Frankly the serial prefix alters value very little anymore as most Member purchased ones have long since hit the civilian market.

In absolutely pristine condition (which you say this is not) $1000.00

Run of the mill cond (meaning unfired, box and acc's tattered, bet, etc..$500-$700

The box, pictured sleeve etc are very important in valuing these.. in order to get top dollar, the entire package must be in pristine condition.

The occasional 'New' mountie may look for these as a display item with other RCMP stuff. 'swords' badges etc...They are however few and far between in this day and age....different era altogether than 1973 when these were issued!!

Long gun registry saw most 'members only issue' hit the resale market, as believe it or not, most cops don't have 'FAC/PAL' for firearms. not needed for govt issue.

clean it up and hang onto it..good conversation piece if nothing else.

just a further note. These guns were manufactured in 1971 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of RCMP/NWMP..which was 1973.

There were 9500 'RCMP' serialed guns (civilian issue)
there were 5100 'MP' serialized guns made (Members issue)

There were also supposedly 10..presentation models made ..at a cost of $9995.00US!!! Have never seen one of these and don't know to 'whom' they were presented!

Me, I'd rather have the Oliver Winchester commemorative.... :p

NAA.

If the rust is bad Ted, that rifle unfired with the box is a $600.

Ive sold a couple in mint condition for $850

And yes, that foam will collect moisture.....too bad it found its way onto the musket.
