Value of NIB Unfired S&W M&P 5" in .38 Special

I was wondering as to the approximate "resale" value of the following gun:

- Smith & Wesson M&P revolver
- Pre-WWII gun (late 30's?)
- Unfired & in original condition, with original box & paperwork
- 5" Barrel
- Caliber is .38 Special
- Serial number begins with "HB". Apparently this means it was an unissued gun for the RCMP - Hudson Bay Police Detachment.

I think this is one of those special items that its hard to put a price on. The right person may pay $800-900 , or someone thats not a collector of police history may only want to pay $500-600. Don't quote me on that, its a beautiful revolver.:cool:
 
I'd say $450-$500 in the condition from the photo's. The cylinder has been rotated enough to leave a mark, eliminating NIB condition.
 
I would agree with Hitzy that it isn't NIB because of the line now on the cylinder. But it does look nice. No other marks other than that?

Rudy is just being cheap... I'll give you $250... shipped of course.

PS - nicely done pictures. Well, except for the blurry butt. (get your head of the dirt I am talking about the last picture!)

That is a beautiful piece. As a lover of the fine old Smiths, thats just about the nicest one I've ever seen. What makes you think it's from the 30's?

The "experts" on the Smith & Wesson forum told me, based on the serial number.
 
Nice S&W!

Nice wheelgun... 'course I'm a sucker for an old highly polished S&W with the case hardened trigger & hammer. Especially with the nicely checkered walnut diamond grips. Slight score on the cylinder wouldn't be enough to scare away a serious collector on one of that vintage either. Bonus, too, is the original box. :cool:
 
I have exactly the same type of revolver, also NIB, everything looks the same. And I have just received the Letter of Authentication from Roy Jinks, Historian in S&W.

According to him, this is a .38 Military & Police Model of 1905 4th Change. Mine was shipped from S&W on July 28, 1939, and delivered to Marshall-Wells Co., Winnipeg, Manitoba. The shipment had 35 units. My gun's serial # is: 678 5xx. If yours is close, then maybe it belongs to the same shipment.

PM me if you want to know more about the letter from S&W.

As for value, it is hard to tell. Sometimes you can buy this type of old revolvers at around $300. But if it is new, unfired, with original box, then the actual value should be more than $600, and rising..... I think......
 
Rule of thumb for guns (and every other item), it's worth what someone is willing to pay for it.
Posting good quality pics DOES go a long way to make us gun nuts drool and start wondering if we could afford to make an offer... how high can we go... etc. :p

And BTW, very nice piece. I have a 4" model 10, similar but of course not "the same".

Does anyone know if RCMP standard issue M10 are available anywhere

These are indeed very fine revolvers and all I have seen or own are in almost new condition in their boxes, I am quite sure that they sold to Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting of Flin Flon MB in the late 1930s for their security people, the HB stamping was done after the revolvers were shipped, the highest number I have noted is HB 36, I don't beleive there is any R.C.M.P. connection, anyway I could use another one at the right price?
