A co-worker of mine is trying to find out the value of an older Italian over under he has. Its a 12ga. IC over M, Model 83 manufactured by Rota Luciano. Nickel plated engraved reciever, gold doubble triggers. The gun its self is in around 95% condition. Odd safe kiss and what not. The action still locks up tight.

Any help would be great.

Sorry for the bad pics. I was on my way out of the shop and he showed up and wanted me to take em in the trunk of his car. I don't have any of the barrel, the memory in my phone ran out of space.

Well whadya know, the Blue Book isn't completely useless - it lists Luciano Rota. The SXS is the only type ever imported into North America. There are 3 different models and several grades.

Blue Book estimates are reasonably close to AMERICAN market values. Sometimes those values are lower or higher in Canada. But, they show it as being worth between $295 and $1925. The low end of that range is for the least valuable model/grade, but it still assumes 60% condition. The high end is for a Model 106 "slug gun" in 100% condition WITH side plates and hand engraving.

I can't see the pics (blocked at this location), but a detailed description would help determine which model you're looking at.

He used to live in Prague so he could have very well brought it with him to Canada.

Its a Model 83.

Thanks for the help.

Looks like you guessed it. He must have brought it with him, as it's not one of the models that were imported into North America. I'll try to remember to look at the pictures when I'm at home tonight. If the model 83 is similar to one of the models that are listed, it should at least give you an idea.

That would be great. Thanks for all the help man.

There's not much information available on these guns. While researching, I discovered that the importer that carried Rota's shotguns in the US (Tristar)now has an almost identical gun that they call the "Hunter". The Competition/Hunting model sells for $820 USD new.

Based on this, I would put the Canadian value of your friend's O/U at $550 to $650. This is assuming the barrels and forend are in excellent condition, as the receiver and butt stock appear to be.

Found the quote below (at this site: http://www.thehighroad.org/archive/index.php/t-304279.html )

Tonight, while skimming over an old Shooter's Bible 1991, No. 82, I came across 'Navy Arms' O/U's, and there it was bigger'n Dallas. :)The Italian Model 83:p, with chrome receiver, 28" chrome lined barrels, and double gold plated triggers, checkered European Walnut wrist and forend. Price $320. That has to be my son's Rota.

10/08/07 UPDATE:
From Navy Arms Representative E-Mail quote -
" those guns were imported from 1985 - 1990.
I am unable to give you an exact date when your gun was imported due to all of the
records being turned into the BATF on the move from NJ to
WV, therefore we have no older NJ records.
I can give you an estimate on the price high end overall excellent condition
$300.00, low end $180.00. Manufactured by R Luciano with
double set triggers and engraved chrome receiver, vent barrels
(bored M/F or IC/M) and rib." end quote........

I've also had individual reports of $1,000.

Rota is a current manufacturer, based in Bescia, Italy. Perhaps they can tell you what they think it's worth. This is the only contact data I've found:
