Maybe trading one or more of my Smith's. Need a fair estimate of what they are worth.
3 guns- 2" round butt M36
-3" square butt M36
- M39 with 2 mags.
All have been fired but look like new. I have the box, papers etc for 3". M39 has a 4 digit serial #

Thanks

The 2" Model 36's usually go for around $250. Maybe a bit of a premium if you have the original box & papers. The 3" is a bit more unusual and may command a little higher price. The 4" Model 39 may get you as much as $400 from the right buyer but $350 is more likely. Plus shipping of course.

Nothing wrong with any of them but none are particularly desireable these days due to the 12(6) status....:(

I don't think it's an issue of "not very desireable"... in fact I would argue there is a huge "desire" out there to buy them... the problem is that the people who want them are not ALLOWED to buy them because of the 12(6) legislation.

Most of those who have 12(6) status already own more "Prohibs" than they want. For the first while we bought up guns because they seemed cheap... we watched the resale values fall as the buyers died off and stopped buying.

Now there's just so few buyers that the value is practically nothing. I've been lucky to get $300 for many of my 12(6) S&W's which is ridiculous. They are worth more than that... if not for the 12(6) legislation these guns would be selling for $500 and up. They are worth more in the US than they are here in many cases... but cost to export is just too much and eats up the higher values down south.

Bottom line is that an item is worth what an arms-length buyer is willing to pay for it. If there are more of that item for sale than there are buyers... then the price they are willing to pay tends to be quite low.

As more of the 12(6) license holders die off or get out of the "market" the prices will only continue to fall... until they are worth literally nothing. That's the sad truth of this. The entire 12(6) prohibition was nothing more than confiscation through attrition. Welcome to Canada.

Mark,
Have you looked at 12(6) prices in the EE for good pistols?

The sellers haven't got the news yet.

I think they've "got the news"... they just don't want to accept it. That's the problem with the EE... people can ask whatever they want (which is fair and correct)... but you have to look through all of the BS listings to find the realistic ones.

I could list a whole bunch of 12(6) guns in the EE at twice or three times what they're worth... but they'll just sit there. If I want to sell one I put it on the Gun Auction site with a Reservie price... that way the market determines the value... if someone out there wants it and is willing to pay enough to be acceptible to me then we end up making a deal... if someone outbids them well that itself shows that the value was more than the first person bid... but in the end it's worth what a buyer is willing to pay.

Sometimes you get more than you expected... sometimes less.

Right now I have a S&W Model 60 (Excellent condition) on the GunAuction site... currently the high bid is $170.00 which is ridiculously low (in my opinion) but if that's all the market is prepared to pay then I guess that's the value (at least today's value). Tomorrow maybe someone will bid more. What's the point in my asking $500 or $600 and sitting for months trying to find a buyer at that price... it's obvioiusly not worth that much to anyone. At $170.00 I won't sell it (not today)... if I don't get my reserve then I'll keep it... but the last few 12(6) guns I've sold have been right around $300.00 (just under or just over)... so I figure that's pretty much where the market is today.

If people in the EE had to pay to list their items you'd see a lot less of that crap... prices would be more realistic and the fodder would be gone. Don't get me wrong... I'm not putting down the EE... far from it. I'm only pointing out the downside of a classified type listings when there's no cost to post and no time limit or reason to make prices realistic. The listings become full of fodder and buyers have to waste time searching through that to find the realistic stuff. No system is perfect I guess... That's the way the marketplace works.

some of those 12x guns are worth the loot. I sold a s&w .44mag mnt for a fair price ($800ish) and I would not have taken a penny less. iirc I paid the shipping but that is how I roll. My point is it is all about the item. The last Model 60 I bought as a killer deal from a member here and hundreds under a realistic price. My win and he got it moved fast.

At the end of the day it ####ing sucks that most can't purchase these guns. Age discrimination and dissarmanent by attrition.

Blah....

Despite perceived flaws, for the average Canadian gun nut - rather than, perhaps, for the discriminating gentleman collector - the EE is better than any auction site.

Way better...in my opinion.

I, like may others, have pretty much stopped buying 12(6) guns. The are not an "investment" but just an expense. Expect to see prices drop even further over the next 10+ years.

Obviously, the ones worth the most are pre-1946 and those that can easily be barrelled.
