My BIL has about 100 rounds of this with stainless steel casings.
It's stored in a wooden box, hole per round, and has a mag loader clip as well.
I just have this one round, no pics of the box or loader.
They were for a Krag-Jorgenson rifle stolen long ago and I told him I'd try to find out what the value of the ammunition might be.
I'm guessing the SS is more desirable than brass for reloading.

Some are stamped KRAG, others RANO.

Thanks for any input.

The cases may be SS[unlikely]...if that is the case, they are basically useless for reloading.
However, it is more likely that they are nickle plated brass...OK to reload.

However, they are also probably Berdan primed, a nuisance to reload.

Regards, Dave.

They are nickel plated: On the edges of the rim brass colouration is showing where the nickel has been dinged, rubbed and generally worn off.

Stainless steel is less maleable than conventional steel (cases) and harder because of chrome alloying: Therefore SS cases (never heard of them existing) would be harder on dies, and not take well to the stresses of resizing.

The headstamp says they originated in Norway. The RANO is a Norwegian marker.
Primer also is marked with the RN, indicating original loaded round.

[Edit] The RANO was a co-operative effort between Raufoss of Norway and Norma of Sweden, and the ammo
you have was manufactured sometime between 1965 and 1989, so may be quite OK to shoot.
Norma actually had a factory in Norway for some time, closing it down about 1990.

Interesting that this stuff has shown up on here. We do not see it very often.

Is it possible that you might get a picture of the "KRAG" headstamp??

Regards, Dave.

Yes, but not anytime soon, BIL lives 4 hours away.
I'll get more history for you, it's quite possible he bought the rifle and ammunition overseas many years ago.

Thank You! These 6.5x55 cartridges interest me a lot, and I'm always looking for variants.

It appears that, besides North America, the 6.5x55 was loaded in Denmark, Sweden [of course], Norway, Finland, Germany, and the Netherlands.
There may be other sources as well. They will show up eventually, I'm sure.

Cheers, Dave.

I've got a few hundred rounds of Rano left from a full sealed case my dad bought back in the late 1970's. Still shoots very accurately and consistent. It's excellent ammo but it is Berdan primed. Mine isn't nickle plated and is 159 grain soft point. We've been taking deer with it every season since he bought it way back then! Shoots into dime sized groups at 100 yards with scoped M-38 swedes!
