value of this rifle ???

Hello,

Hope i post it at a good place...

This is a rifle a friend of mine whant to sell, i didn't see the rifle but here is the info he give me.

It supposed to be a Martini-Henry 577/.450, hope you can read the stamping, there is a crown, under that there is V.R. - enfield - 1887 - IV. - 1

He also tell me that this rifle have been used during the Batoche War (under Louis Riel) true or false ???

Anyway, i just need info on how he can ask for this thing, if anybody can help him

It is a MkIV Martini Henry. This model was not used in Canada. They were sold as surplus in Canada in the 1960-70s.
 
V.R. means Victoria Regina. 1887 the year is was made. Batoche was the final battle in the Riel Rebellion of 1885, not a war.

Martini rifles are of current interest to me. I have been shopping around for a couple.

What I have found is that there is a great deal of difference in price, depending where you go.

Condition is the most important factor. The amount of original finish left on the metal makes the biggest difference.

From what i can see from your pics, there is still some remaining blue finish left. Very difficult to say, but the rifle looks like it might clean up to be an honest example for a collector. All parts seem to be there.

Mk.IVs don't command the high prices as the earlier models. Not because the earlier ones are better rifles, the Mk.IV has many technical improvements, but the earlier ones have more historical interest. This is silly because most rifle have no proveneace and their past is an unknown.

But to answer your question. Value of this rifle? Anywhere from $350 to $500. Alot depends on the buyer, the weather and the time of day :).
