I have a friend that has a 1876 Winchester .45-75 saddle ring carbine marked NWMP in antique excellent condition. Any ideas on a value? I know they are worth more stateside an estimate from each country would be great.

thanks Darryl

Any pics?

Looks the same. My buddies gun is in very very good condition. It even has NWMP cartouche on the butt stock. No cracks in the wood. Bore is pitted but shootable. Bluing is at 85%. No pics at this time. Documented that the rifle was delivered to a border xing at Emmerson Manitoba by the NWMP on the March west. Border guard is direct relative of my buddy. I have him getting the rifle lettered by the Cody Museum right now.

cheers Darryl

Any ideas on a value?

Values on these things are based on mostly what you pay for it & as Viscious said

Condition...condition...condition :D

I know I'm lookin at a 45-65 rifle in equal or better shape than the one above & it's price is well above $3500. :(
I also know, I turned down a RCMP 76 carbine about 5 years ago in average shape (certainly no-where near as nice as the one Meana showed) for $3500.

I wouldn't give a value on one now as you just don't see enough changing hands to get a feel what some-one either side of the border would pay!

According to the blue book of gun values(this year 27th edition)model 1876 lever action Northwest mounted police carbine:
"NWMP" or "MP" marking may appear on stock (with wear this cartouche may not be visible-the majority were not marked)approx 1600 mfg.,factory records can only verify 150.

in above average cond.it states: $5,350-$6,500 USD

in average cond-$4,150-$5,250 USD

below average--$3,100-$4,150 USD

Even at 10% condition it gives a value of $2750 USD and at 95% is gives a value of $15,000.
I'm just quoting the blue book so please dont anyone start getting pissy with me !!!

Keep it in Canada......

This is a piece of Canadian history and should not be sold out of our country! I have no doubts that someone here will pick it up for whatever price is asked. It is alarming how many of our best historic pieces leave Canada. Some feel that money is the only consideration.....not so. There are some very active Winchester collectors here.

My buddy is not considering selling the rifle. He only wanted a ball park figure on the rifle's value to satisfy his own curiosity. This mountie issue Winchester will stay in Canada.

cheers Darryl

Not exactly sure what you mean here? The '76s were shipped well after "the march west".

The "March West" referral was my friends and not mine. I am not an avid historian on the RCMP and did not notice the error. The rifle is definately a NWMP issue rifle. It was obviously delivered by a horseman on some march west.

cheers Darryl

(Edit: Oops! Didn't see the second page of this thread before I posted - now I see others already "jumped on you" ... Thought I should add this so you don't start to think you're really being picked on .... ;) )

"Documented that the rifle was delivered to a border xing at Emmerson Manitoba by the NWMP on the March west."

Sorry to disagree, but that is impossible ... The "March West" took place in 1874 ... The first Model 1876 rifles were not received by the NWMP until mid-1878.
