Greetings from Vancouver Island.

I wouldn't call myself a gun nut. To date I've viewed firearms more as a tool to help me accomplish a task - much like a hammer.

These days I don't do much hunting. Instead I backpack into the mountains and fish for trout. I always catch enough to prevent me from going hungry. Sometimes I even gain weight on these outings.

I set a goal in 2015 to purchase a handgun. It's just something I've always wanted, likely an older revolver with some collectibility. However, It's been almost 20 years since I took my restricted exam so I'll be poking around the forum to refresh my memory on related issues (storage, transport, registration transfer, etc).

Unfortunately you won't be able to bring your restricted pistol with you when you backpack, not legally anyways.

There's been some debate whether you can carry an antique pistol legally. Technically not a firearm and does not need to be registered. The consensus is they would probably charge you if discovered but you would probably win in court.

Buddy of mine has a first generation Colt Peacemaker that is an antique, very collectable but also very expensive.

Thanks for the advice, @Dave_G! I have no intention of packing a revolver into the backcountry with me. Besides being illegal, it's too much unnecessary weight.

Antique hand guns require no Pal/Rpal or any firearms license. No permit to transport it or any registration of any kind. Several choices in the $1200-$4000 range look in the Equipment Exchange (EE) under Antiques
