I was sitting on the deck in the sun when I had the following thought (And no I wasn't drinking).

"What would the performance improvements be (if any) by having the Vang Comp process applied to a 8.5" Remington 870 barrel?"

I suspect there wouldn't be much room to lengthen the forcing cone and back-bore the remaining barrel.

Not sure if there would be a performance improvement. What is the minimum length barrel for this application.

Second thought was "If VC process doesn't work is there enough meat on the barrel to thread for choke tubes".

Discuss.....

What's the desired end result for doing so? What anmo are you wanting to shoot out of it? What's the intended purpose of the firearm? Maximum effective range for the intended useage?

i do not know of an 8.5 Remington barrel . i believe you are talking about dlask or dominion arms barrels. they would have enough barrel wall for a choke installation. as for an improvement for the Vang Comp treatment i have no answer. i have a 12.5 dlask barrel threaded for chokes and it is a favourite of mine . the 8.5 barrels threaded for chokes would make for an interesting experiment . someone must have tried this . i find the 8.5 barrel pattern good for twenty yards . slugs i have shot to 50 yards on paper with good results and i am sure the range could be doubled but i have not tried it . there are some results on this site about the velocity out of these 8.5 barrels if you search for it .

FYI: Ended up emailing Casey. His comments are summarized as follows:

1. We don't do Chinese barrels as quality is unknown.
2. Choke may be an option if sufficient thickness remains between barrel band and barrel.
3. Leave well enough alone and enjoy factory specs.

Still have an itch to see how tight I can get an 8.5" barrel to shoot just for S&G.
