Due to the enormous amount of loads for this cartridge I was hoping for a shortcut, I will be using once fired winchester brass with CCI 250 primers the gun has a 1-14" twist.

I never shoot max. loads any recomendations will be approached with caution

Coyote 55 grain bullet what brand? type ?
powder? starting load?

Gopher grain? powder?

I just don't want 1/2 cans of powder laying around I won't ever use, I'm too cheap to dispose of them and I already have enough ghosts of guns gone by

I have had good results with IMR-4064 and IMR-4895 under 50gr. Vmax bullets, using PRVI brass and CCI primers. You don't really need the 250's unless you are using a ball powder and maybe not even then. I used 200's with no problems.

Your 1:14 twist probably won't stabilize anything heavier than 60gr bullets, and maybe only flat base bullets at that weight. If it was me, I would work up one load with 50gr or 55gr bullets and use it for everything.

Thanks Mark I have 2 Lbs. of leftover IMR-4064 to start with, the 250 primers are left from the "great primer shortage" a few years back. All the loadind data available is for 24" or 26" barrels I'm not really concerned about speed I'll take whatever load gives the best accuracy without any pressure signs. Just needed a starting point.
Would faster burning powders compensate for shorter barrels?

I have been told that the load that gives highest velocity in a 26" barrel will also give the highest in a 20" barrel, but haven't loaded enough rifle ammo to be able to confirm that. More than anything, there is only a small range of powders that will operate correctly in the particular conditions you have and those will be the ones that are most consistent and accurate. Muzzle velocity is less critical to me than consistency overall.

My best load of 4064 under a 50gr Vmax was 36.7gr, with a max load tested of 37.5gr. That is slightly over Hogdgon's max of 37.0gr, so use at your own risk. That load was well under MOA (around 1/4 MOA on a good day) in my Savage 12FV, even with the flexi-flier stock.

Loading manuals are all over the map, my first manual was P.O Ackley's the worst choice for a first time reloader! I'm really suprised he lived to an old age.
I always start at least 5 grs lower then work up slow until I start to get pressure signs back off some then start different seating depths to tune it in. I have surpassed data in some books but never P.O Ackley's!

4064 and 50 or 55 Vmax works excellent in my rifles, however 4064 does not meter that well and I weigh every charge.

I always weigh every charge of extruded powder the only charges I don't weigh are flake powder for pistol loads. Because Its possible to accidently double charge with ball powders I weigh them as well.

Does anyone use Reloader 15 with .224 52 gr. v-max?

I tried 33.5 gr. to 37.5 gr in 1/2 grain increments in my Vanguard 22-250 best group was at 37.5. This is listed as max load on the Alliant web site, I am not showing any signs of excess pressure, primer looks good, primer pockets not enlarged, bolts not hard to open. I was going to use 37.5 gr, OAL 2.375, CCI 200 to load 50 rounds for some target shooting.
When I checked around the net to see what others were shooting the loads were much lower aroung 33-35 grs. I was just checking to see what loads other people were using.

As mentioned earlier in this thread I was going to try some 4064 I had on hand, when I looked closer at the cans the price tag said $11.50 and the brand was Dupont not IMR. I poured some into a dish a cloud of red dust swirled up. Time for a fire next time I'm at the gravel pit!

H380 was my go to powder in the 22-250, 4064, 4320 and 4895 works well as do many others. 22-250 is very easy to load for in my opinion, lots of combinations work well. I used mostly 55 gr bullets.

Due to very limited selection of powder at the local dealers all H380,4064 Varget sold out. I went with Reloader 15 as suggested by the sales person seems like good powder but very limited loading data available, I was just wondering if anyone else tried it

for 55 grain bullets and R-15 the range would be 31gr.-35.5gr. (sources vary a bit) Its a very similar burn rate as others mentioned. I would try it and work up a load from minimum and find the accuracy/speed you are looking for.

for the gophers and target in the back of the property I go with Barnes 36 gr Varmit Granades ... and my experience is that alot of people carry them. With this I use BL-C2 ( i like how it meters) and load at the mid range recommended by Barnes which is approx 28 gr's. I haven't had the time to load 1/2 gr increments to see exactly what load works best.

for the bigger dog's like the cote's I go with 50 grain V max and Nosler 50 gr ballistic tips, and have used Varget. Again I load at mid range ... but again have yet to load in 1/2 increments to see whats ideal.

For my load data I always use the bullet manufacturers recommendations. If you want to save on powder then just load the heavier grain bullets ... for the smaller grains will take more powder and also travel a bit faster.

In my savage Axis 22-250 with the 1:14 twist for coyotes I use: 34.5gr of IMR 4895, CCI 200 primers, Hornady 55gr V-Max bullets. The most consistent, tight groups yet!
For a lighter grain bullet I tried the Sierra varminter in a 45gr with 36grains of IMR 4895 and CCI 200 primers.
Both were seated at: 2.350 OAL

USE AT OWN RISK.

I have a Stevens 22-250 REM 22" Barrel with a 1:12 twist that shoots bug holes at 100yrds all day long. Bullet is seated on the lands, 35gr of Varget, CCI Lrg Primer, under a Sierra 60gr HP Varminter. Altitude 3450feet. Bullet runout is less than .002". I use this load for shootin yotes and gophers every weekend. I am not a fan of resighting in different ammo.
