Good news from W'by - apparently the new Vanguards will have a new trigger, adjustable from 2.5 to 3.8 lbs, preset at a bit over 3#. Supposed to be very crisp, creep-free, nothing like the current POC that feels like it's packed in gravel. About bloody time - saves buying a Timney when you pay for your Vanguard.

I think one day I'd like to pick up a nice straight combed walnut stock. That's an improvment.
Only if it fits you better... straight combs look like crap and don't feel good to me... I LOVE the Monte Carlo stocks of the Weatherby rifles.
Do a side by side comparison with a Rem700 and you'll be surprised. Now that the trigger is fixed they're the better gun IMO and I won both. They're little things but they do add up.
- Bolt handle and bolt are one piece of steel (nicer bolt knob too)
- Accepts Rem 700 bases
- Flat bottom receiver (IMO better and easier to bed)
- Recoil lug is part of the receiver
- Better extractor
- Bolt body is vented
- Better finished IMO
All in all a better gun at a better price.

I too prefer a straight combed stock, but the Weatherby Monte-Carlo is perhaps the last over the counter stock that is available for those who appreciate the California stock design. I will say that anytime I've shouldered a Weatherby, a MK-V or a Vanguard, my cheek hit the stock and the reticle was right there with no need to wiggle around looking for it, so to say that a straight comb stock would be an improvement might be a slight exageration, although it would be nice if both styles were available. On the other hand I don't want to be the guy who tries to mash his cheek down on the Weatherby cheek piece trying to find the irons on a .378 or .460. Even the comb on my McMillan stocked 602 is high enough to make shooting irons unpleasant.
It's not that I don't like the monte-carlo, I just prefer nice walnut and a straight comb. I'm not a fan of Weatherby's high gloss finish, but I do like the Howa rifle. I think with a nice plain walnut stock, this would be a handsome rifle.

Ive owned about twelve or fifteen new Rem 700's in the past six years, and they've all shot great and their triggers are easy to adjust. Bedding the stocks is not difficult either, even though it is round action... I'm not opposed to other brands, I also currently own CZ & Sako in bolt actions, have owned Winchester too, & Marlin, Ruger in other action types. I've thought about tring a Wby Vanguard but honestly, even though they're inexpensive, Id still have to spend $800 to replace the stock & trigger to make it something I'd like enough to keep. I shot a Howa 1500 a couple weeks ago and it impressed me with the accuracy, for a new gun with factory ammo. The Hogue stock is also a nicer stock than what the VG's come with.
I dont mind the Vanguard BackCountry but its far from the average VG.
Well hopefully the new trigger is good, and yes the Vanguard stock you either like or you don't. Neat thing about the Howa though is they sell barreled actions (well at least in the US). If they were offered up here as such I think it could be quite popular once people get over the fact that while it doesn't say Remington on the side it's just as good and at a better price.
I have been disappointed with Remington as of late . I buy all sorts of rifles (econo and higher end) and this year I bought a SPS DM in 30-06 vs a Vanguard. The SPS was a bad choice The mag is very hard to take out, the finish is chipping off the barrel, trigger is not great and the stock....well its flimsy and cheap. Only good thing I can say about it is it comes with a nice recoil pad.
I did kill all the animals I pulled the trigger on so it did get the job done but Remington really seems to be cheaping out.

dont buy an SPS if you expect a high quality finished rifle. Im sure it was accurate enough though, and fed reliably
Yeah I had no idea it would flake off as easily as it does. I actually really like the matte finish and texture of the stuff but it just does not hold on the metal for long.

Im not a fan of the Howa 22 inch barrel, for some strange reason, I always shoot my calibre(.3006) better with a 24 inch barrel like the weatherby vanguard
