I have heard mention of a detach mag kit for these.
Do they work well?

Where would one find one and what sort of kerch$ng do they run?

the only detach mag kits I've seen for the vanguards have all been 25-06, 270 30-06 kits, at around 100 bucks or slightly more if I remember correctly.

That's right. They are only for the long action. The vanguard actually has two action lengths so there is no possible way the kit will work with 308. The screw spacing is totally different as well as the length of the receiver.

The 308 will be a short action. From what I have seen and been told, the detatchable mags are kinda crappy plastic crap, plus they only hold three rounds instead of 5.

That is also true. I have owed a vanguard dbm which came from the factory with the kit preinstalled instead of the metal.

While I generally love vanguards I have to say that I was very dissatisfied with that kit.

They're not loads me through the ejection port and are kind if difficult too ad in general.

For some reason, the magazine is only held in the well by the front. There is nothing retaining the rear of the magazine and it actually will droop down and rattle and make noise. Mine never fell out (before I sold it) but it didn't seem to be very well designed or any kind of quality.

Vanguards are the best value in firearms today and they offer real quality. In my opinion, the dbm kit should be exempt from tht assesment.

 I was thinking the same thing. I think the jist of it is detachable magazine bad, vanguard good.

I absolutely love my wood stock vanguard. Its easy to drop the floorplate, I don't really see the need for a detachable mag on it. My experience with detachable mags is that I tend to lose the mag in the woods and need a trip to Cabelas for a new one.

One advantage would be the claimed drop in weight....but yes a hinged floor plate work just fine.

here's a shot of a very good detachable mag setup for a Howa/Vanguard.

This is a long action from an 80's Howa 1550. It's an all metal assembly.

Weatherby would do better to get Howa to bring back this system but it would cost too much.

The new dm doesnt seem to sit tight in the stock, as stated. Rear has no support. Buddy had one in his vanguard, went back to the floorplate.

I know of only 2 sources for Detachable Box Magazines (DBM) available as aftermarket conversions for the Weatherby Vanguard :

(1) As mentioned above, Weatherby markets it's own DBM conversion kit for Vanguard rifle chambered in long (e.g. .25-06/.270/.30-06) cartridge sizes.
The kit replaces the steel floorplate, spring and trigger guard with a plastic magazine that holds 3 rounds.

(2) ATI makes DBM's for Vanguard (and Howa) rifles chambered in short (e.g. .223) and medium (e.g. .308/.243/7mm-08) cartridge sizes.
Magazine capacity is either 5 or 10 rounds.

Yes, the detachable magazines are made of plastic - which may not necessarily be a bad thing.
However, I expect that the new floorplate and trigger guard in the kits are also made of plastic.

iPhone auto correct changed a few words on me and I didn't notice. Hopefully you got the gyst.

Translation:

They're not loadable through the ejection port and are kind of difficult too load in general. (The rounds have to be slipped in from the front, you cannot simply press the rounds in from the top like most magazines)
