vanguard varmint special 2

does anyone have one of these? how are they compared to the normal vanguard.... Ordered a vanguard in 223 and this is what showed up.. was I upgraded, or ripped off?

Use would be mostly coyotes

Does it have a short heavy barrel?? If yes you'll have to decide if you like how it feels.

I have one, weatherby vanguard series 2 it's a bit heavy if you walk a lot. But it shoots one ragged hole groups. Trigger is awesome! Bolt is slick and smooth. I like it, but it is a little barrel end heavy and a bit heavy if you do a lot of walking. Shoots like a laser beam though.

Not sure you could find a better calling rifle.

yes 22" heavy barrel and standard griptonite stock havent gone down to play with it to see what twist it has

How are you hunting coyotes?? Calling, running dogs or tracking?

If you are calling it's great rifle. If you are running dogs buy the mag kit or sell it and get a rifle with clip. If you are tracking them in the snow it's a toss up, the short barrel in maneuverable but it is a little on the heavy side for walking.

I topped mine with the vanguard one piece base and rings (talley) med rings and a Nikon prostaff 4-12x BDC reticle.

If you ordered the varmint special you got what you ordered. Its heavier than I like my hunting rifles to be. They make those with a 1 in 9" twist, I believe, so you do have some leeway with bullet choice but some 75+ grain bullets may not stabilize, if that is a goal. Not an end of the world thing for a primarily coyote rifle. Lots of very good 55-70 grain bullets. Are you planning to handload or shoot factory?

Had one in 308 win 22'' heavy barrel varmint s2 . could not get great groups with mine ,, great trigger smooth bolt ,, however could not get better than 1'' groups at best most loads were 1.5'' to 2.5 '' groups ... yes I did barrel break in shoot and clean after every shot for 20 shots // then shoot and clean after 3 shot groups ,, for another box of ammo .. bedding looked good .. tried 2 new scopes . same story ... sold rifle as I was disappointed with accuracy .

thanks guys after playing with it for a while, I think it is going to stay with me.. No its not what i ordered, I ordered a vanguard 223 with a 24" barrel, but got the 22" heavy barrel. it does seem a little front heavy, but im sure it will balance out once a scope is on it. I did confirm it is a 1:9 twist, which is good (most online say 1:12) I will be shooting factory loads, whatever it likes best, probably 55 or 62gr
