Varget Backorder... Alternatives?

So I'll be driving past a powder dealer this weekend and I wanted to make the most of this trip and pick up a few pounds of Varget, but it's on backorder till April


So now I'm looking at alternatives and could use some advice. Its for .223 1:7" twist, bullet weights of 69gr and up.

Because it's a local pick-up, price is a minor concern, VihtaVuori N-540 is looking very tempting...

In addition, waiting till April is possible, but it'll involve paying shipping...

I assume you're talking about Higginson Powders? They usually stock it.
Accuracy Plus in Peterborough does have a few lbs in stock.

Hmmm too bad, tons of varget here.

H4895 works just as good as varget in my 1:7.7 for 69, and 77SMK.

4895 has very similar properties

4064, RL-15. Almost grain-for-grain with Varget in the 223 in my experience

I tried 8082XBR OCW test with 75 bthp's last afternoon, and each five shot group I shot went into under MOA, the better half under half-MOA. 8082 was crap in my 308, but its shining in the 223.

N-540 is the bomb with heavier bullets in the .223, you get more velocity too...

I use aa2230 or h335... But then again only load 55gr right now. AA2230 meters well and seems to give me the best accuracy in my Tikka

Benchmark is another one of their Extreme powders and burns just a little faster than H335. (80 and 81 on Hodgdon's chart). It was developed for target shooters.

RL15 is extremely similar, I used the same charge weight in my .223/90VLD combo as Varget.

Benchmark worked good for the 80's, not so much for the 90's

I should be able to get varget... however shipping it properly is going to run about $50 Via DHL hazadous goods... I can ship up to 11kgs per day.

I know I'll be corrected here but I thought I read on here somewhere that the surplus stuff Higginson's sells (WC-735) was working pretty good for the .223 crowd...??

big fan of Benchmark myself and use imr4198 for my cast loads in 223, never tried it in heavy bullets though. i heard imr4064 is good but never used it in 223. 4064 may be temp sensitive tho. never experimented with it much.

N 140 or RL 15 for the 30 cal stuff, H4895 for the small... works for me!

Varget is over-rated.

That's what I was hoping to hear, more of an excuse to pay the extra couple bucks for something with a fancy label.

Yeah it's too bad shipping this stuff is so expensive. Makes having a local dealer very ideal...

Varget is over-rated.

I'm starting to learn that, at least it's got it's uses!
