Varmint cartridges

Depends on the time of year and location , if im in or around with livestock 223 seems to bother them less most other times it would have to be a 243 , bullet selection is better to that thenof tge 22-250 near identical velocities and more versatile id i rather take it deer hunting then the 308

In talking with several others i hunt with ive noticed pretty much everyone uses either the 223 or the 22 250 for varmints up to coyotes. Mind you we are all from southern ontario. Now i admit im fielding a 223 this season as it shot so well i couldn't bring myself to rebarrel it to a 20cal just yet. Got me thinking does anyone else still use oldschool varmint cartridges? 17s and 20s? Are the 6s and quarter bores just passed over for the main stream 22s and 6.5cm?

My renewed interest in varmint rifles got me thinking so what do you use and where do you it and for what?

I'm in southern ontario as well; currently using a 17 HMR, but my go to in the past was a 6.5 Swedish Mauser. I should never have sold it, and will be replacing it with another 6.5 SE this year. Accurate, flat shooting, and a lot easier on barrels than a .22-250. Big enough for moose and deer, and vaporizes ground-hogs when loaded with light, fast hollow points like nothing else!!!

Ruger tang safety 77 in .220 Swift HB and a HB and a sporter M77 in 6MM , Ruger No1 in .218 Bee and an Anschutz .22 Hornet. Pretty well covers the bases in Southern Ontario.

It all depends what I’m shooting. Gophers mostly 22lr, and 22 hornet. Rabbits 22. Coyotes my go to is 243. The hornet works well if calling in close cover. These are my go too guns, I do have choices: 17 rem, 222,223, 22-250, and have had fun with larger black powder cartridges 45-70,50-70,50-90,577-450 and Snider. All stop them in there tracks. Have fun and keep at it, no wrong answer.
