Varmint guys, what's your "go to" beaver gun

I used a CZ 452 HB in .22wmr on one on my buddies property once.
Wasnt what I expected...took two more in the back of the head to finally stop it from swimming away.
Trapping them is a lot quieter than shooting them ...

Any 22 with a solid round nose bullet Hollowpoint just don't work well for me
I don't know why but I would like to try a air rifle Sumtime maybe a 25cal

Hi stick with what is working for you now ''22 mag- 22 hornet'' but if you find you have to be shooting out pass 100 yds. a lot go to a 223
 
I'd like to use a lever in 32H&R mag or 32-20 for the in close stuff and if i had a place to stretch it out I'd take any centerfire varmint round. Unfortunately even though BC has unreal big game hunting for all sorts of critters, it's gotta be the worst or nice for varminting. We aren't allowed to shoot beavers, or most any other small mammals unless on private land and even then sometimes not.

We have decent coyote hunting, lots of wolves if you're lucky enough to cross paths, and magpies and crows. That's about it. Even gophers can only be hunted on private land :)
 
I just love Saskatchewan..... no such thing as "private" and "not private" land. As long as it's not posted otherwise and not within 500m of an occupied dwelling, it's hunt away as much as you want... beavers, gophers, coyotes, coons and many others with proper permitting.... I love my 22 hornet.... after all, it did take my 5 years to find...

I hear you gobigorgohome I'd heard that about Saskatchewan before. Didn't realize there was truth to it. I've always loved Saskatchewan, my family is from Manitoba and I used to live in Alberta. To me the prairies are one of Canada's best kept secrets.

Seems a lot of beavers get stung by the original hornet judging by this thread

But a real gentleman buys an RM map, finds the landowner and seeks permission first off.

Simple and uber easy.

BTW, this strange thing is called improving hunter-landowner relations.

Here is a tip for guys using little bullets. Sight your gun in at as close to the range as you usually shoot 'em - then shorten and extend your target so you know exactly where your bullets hit at each distance. Of course we usually hit the water when a beaver is swimming, so figure out the ranges so this does not happen.

The next tip is a tough one to follow - but worth it. Shoot 'em in the lip. Not kidding - try it. The beaver will climb out and die on land. It seems that he cannot hold his breath, and there is a major blood vessel in the lip/tongue area and it is at least five times more likely to get your beaver than a head shot. Even a little bullet is enough.
