I am wondering on Varmint hunting with an AR-15 on my own farm. This is a restricted rifle I know but can I use it on my own place for hunting ? I have not got one yet but I am looking into one. I am pretty sure the answer is no but any input ?

The only legal place a restricted firearm can be discharged is a range approved by the CFO, by definition, this rules out all hunting, even on your own land.

Otherwise we would all be hunting with them and handguns.

Couldn't have put it better than that. The only "AR" you can hunt with is the AR180-2(non-restricted). AR's are great, but there are other semi autos you can use like the Robinson Armament XCR, or black special.

Not a chance Andy. The moment you hold an AR180 you will drop it in disgust, realizing how inferior it is to your AR. AFAIK nothing is interchangeable between the two other than ammo.

Yup, but there is a current project going on to derestrict the AR, thus making it okay to hunt with, and shoot it your backyard (potentially)

What "project" is this you are speaking of?
The only project that I've heard of to do with AR types is to declassify as restricted in order to toss the into a new PROHIB category!

Oh hey Andy, I meant to mention if you would like to use an "AR" ish rifle out on the farm, you'll have to look the Robinson XCR up. They are non restricted if you didn't know about them, they are worth a look, but they still aren't your AR15 either.

and AR mags too. There not that bad. I have a few AR's and a AR180B, and yeah, I would prefer the AR over the 180, but when it comes down to being in the woods hunting, you don't get the choice. I found the plastic on the 180 very cheap looking, but it shoots very well, a hell of a lot better than my ruger mini 14. If anything was interchangable other than the mags, it would fall in the same class, but that's why it was designed as so. Plus, there are some adapters and forearms that can changed on the 180 to look a lot better.
