I make a point of knocking off a bunch of groundhogs every summer. I usually use a Ruger #1V in .22-250 with a Weaver KT-15 scope. From time to time also use a Remington 541T in .22 lr or my Ruger #1B in .270 Winchester with 110 grain Hornady V-Maxs. I'd like to try hunting furbearers sometime in the winter but I never seem to do. Groundhogs are a lot of fun though.

I like to get out a few times a year to get rid of some gophers with my heavy barrel Sako 222. Lots of fun, especially in the spring when there is still snow on the ground.

vmaster59, I was looking at your blog. Nice entry for December 14. Nice philiosophy about hunting. Although I do find that around here, Eastern Ontario, it does still strike many people as odd that a person would invest significant time, money, and effort into hunting something that you aren't going to eat.

It's more about actually shooting and precision than hunting. I personally don't view big game hunting and varminting as all that similar

ya.. I saw one of those buggers yesterday stealing the peanuts I left for the chipmunks that have a lil home in my shed. Would have popped him but I am in town limits here. I did give him a good scare though lol, I dont think he will be coming back.

I ran one over with the truck last week though on the highway, does that count? lol

^ Why not 'yotes in Summer? I've seen plenty of them while shootin gophers, I'm sure a decent hide and call would get you a few

I hunt yotes quite a bit. I was using a model 70 in 222. But now I am switching to a sako 243. A good scope and lots of range time are essential.

The major ones for me are gophers (spring and summer) and coyotes (mid November till the fur is off prime).

Prosper - lots of jusistictions have some sort of season for coyotes (usually the winter when furs are prime). Alberta on private land it is open year round, but I'll generally shoot them only when the furs are prime, I have a delusion that I will one year shoot enough coyotes to pay for a high performance varmint rig and retire my handi to coyote calling.

If a landowner had a specific problem that needed immediate action I would shoot them. But all of the farmers I deal with are fine with winter shooting

I hunt them in the winter mostly but will wack one whenever I get the chance.

In the winter I can take the yote in for a few bucks

$20-$30 for a whole frozen yote, big holes and all, more if you skin them yourself, and not poke big holes in them, but I'm not trying to make a living from collecting fur, just trying to pay for a tank of gas every now and then.

I head out and smack gophers on a fairly regular basis. Just waiting for the hay to come off one of the fields near-by. The .243 with 58gr V-maxs sure does a number on them. Just got into calling coyotes this last winter. I ordered up a .223 as a dedicated varmit rig, but will be keeping the .243 for the longer shots and windy days.

I was told coyotes have to be bothering livestock etc before you can shoot them.(summer spring)

If I can see them/hear them they are bothering me regardless of the time of the year.

Gophers, and let me be the first to welcome you to the board. Page 2, c'mon boys we're slippin' here.

Hi,thanks for the welcome savagefan. And Chuck as far for the hunting of varmints here it is a part of life. With out varmint hunters the live stock would have a harded time makeing it here.No rain for many years is bad eought.I've done all kind of hunting and this is the best for me.Cause once you set up in my rig and start calling you are no longer the hunter but you are the hunted. Now days I like to see how close I can call them in befor they smell the mouse.I have had they come in running so fast they will run into my truck.See here we can hunt them at night with a light with a red lenes on it.As well as day time hunting. Now with the oil drilling going on now there is a rise in oil related crimes on the ranches. That is when I go hunting two legged varmints. And we have the wets coming over also and the drug runners to deal with. It's nice to talk to people from some other place. If you want to know more about varmint hunting just ask me or try this alot of good guys there. Thanks Clint.
