Varmint Hunting

i've shot a lot of gophers (columbia ground squirrels) on the farm. winchester super X 37 grain hollow points seems to have the best accuracy and "stopping power" in my .22. there are only a couple of windows for this shooting, in the spring until the hay is too tall to see the gophers, then again when the hay is cut. the gophers here are not to be seen after august 15th until spring.

as to coyotes, don't bother too much with them except when they come near the house. they eat a lot of mice. some say they are a serious predator of deer but i can't see that as the deer as like flies where i live. if anything, the deer are the pests.

i use a 22 k-hornet on skunks (and the odd coyote) and a 12 gauge on blackbirds.

i don't consider it to be varmint hunting but i would like to try calling up north for wolves and lynx, maybe even a wolverine.

I just drive around in my truck and kill gophers. Grizz axemann and Prosper came out with me, I thought they had a good time, but I haven't heard from them since.

Vmaster59- There are a few varminter hunters in here. But alot of us just drive around, see a 'yote, get out of the truck, and blast em. I know it ain't fair, but there's a reason we're at the top of the food chain. And what else do you expect to happen in Alberta or Saskatchewan?

PS- Why don't you plan a trip up here and hunt for sheep, deer moose, elk, bear, mountain lion wolf, etc?

Just 'getting into the game'. I have a Ruger #1 V in .22-250 topped with a Bushnell Sportview 6x18. Presently waiting for my Savage .25-06 BVSS HB & Leupold VX-III 6.5-20x40 to arrive. Not a legal reality in Canada but I also have a Remington XP-100 in .221 Fireball with a Leupold M8 X2 that would be fun to use.

Howdy! Glad to have you aboard!

I love varmint shooting, particularly groundhogs. There is some outstanding groundhog hunting here in Ontario. Here are some pictures of my last groundhog hunt with my 8 year old son and his first groundhog.

I was down in Texas several years ago for the SHOT show in Houston. I had the pleasure of meeting lots of similar minded folks, visited alot of gun stores and even got to get out to a gun club. Lovely place, lovely weather and most of all, lovely women! Looks like a great place to hunt, too.
