I am very new to hunting, and I have been using both 180 and 165 gr ammunition at the range / during deer season.

I would like to keep using my .30-06 throughout the winter to hunt varmint.

I don't want to buy a .223, or any other centrefire rifle.

I cannot find varmint loads for my caliber at bps's website, and my le baron's cat. lists remmington managed-recoil centrefire rifle cartridges at 125gr.

Where can I buy .30-06 varmint cartridges?
What are the CONS to using a varmit cartridge in a .30-06?

There is a 55grain "accelerator" load available (or at least it was) for the 30 06, its a 55grn bullet in a Sabot. Some guys swear by them, some guys swear at them. I've heard both sides, there great, and I've heard guys say they don't shoot worth $hit, YMMV.

Someone told me they are not longer made, but I've seen a bunch at a gunshop lately, so others will have to chime in on that fact or not.

I use 150grn Remington Core-Lokt's (hand loads) in my M1 Garand, they work great.

The only Con's I can thing of is more recoil, but the M1 Garand soaks that up with the action and rifle weight, so I wouldn't say personally there are any cons ;)

If you are set on having one rifle for all uses, then you NEED to start reloading. The cost of getting a full reloading setup will be less than a new rifle. Once you are set up, not only will you be able to make 110 gr varmint loads, your 165 and 180 gr loads will be cheaper and more accurate ;) If you go on the reloading forum you will get all the advice you need on getting started

Hornady makes a 150gn load, I just checked wholesale sports site and the Remington 55gn are available, as well as 125, 150, ect

If your not going to handload, your best bet would be buy a few box's of each brand, Winchester, Hornady, Remington, Federal, ect, and find out which ones your rifle shoots best.

I believe Remington makes the125gr factory load it has shot well out of a couple of Bolt 30-06's i have tried soft recoil. as far as finding a retailer that has them in stock you may have to do some searching.

I can't think of any really definite cons but here goes.

Its likely a lot louder than a 223.

There will be more powder in the case with a smaller bullet. So increased velocities and heat possibly equate to faster barrel throat wear.

More powder therefore more expensive to load.

You may find the twist of your barrel has negative effects on the really light bullets.

If you reload the 30 06 is an extremely versatile calibre imho. That might be why I don't own one.

Where?? I'd love to get some more. I'd buy 'em all!! Almost impossible to get and they have always shot great for me.

Wet Blanket.

Hey I don't want to rain on your parade and your practicality, but you should check your hunting regs. Most of Southern Ontario don't allow 30 cals. for that type of hunting. I could be wrong, but double check your hunting regulations. I'm going to check right now. Good Luck.

Chicken is right, any where near 100 miles from T.O. anyways...another approach would be to reload cast bullets for varmints, saving money and wear on your barrel.

But if you shoot the Remington Accelerators, then you are only shooting a .223 (.224 actually). NOT a 30 calibre.
