Varmint rifle in 243 win

I have a Rem. SPS Varmint in 243 in a boyds stock that shoots sub 1/2 inch and stabilizes 105 v max bullets

Hi,

Just a quick update!!

I bought a while back the tikka varmint in 243.

With many 243, one of the potential issues is the barrel twist being too slow for longer heavier bullets.

After a couple shooting sessions, headaches, tests, herés my final setup:

MDT LSS chassis
Magpul «#basic#» pistol grip
Magpul PRS Gen3 butt stock (this one is a must compared to any adjustable or collapsible stock)
Bushnell Engage 6-24 scope
Unknown steel rings (bought used)
20 MOA rail

Until I installed the PRS Stock, I was not able to be comfortable and to get repeatable position at every shot

Today I shot 2 groups under 0,5 MOA at 100yds, and one 0,35 MOA at 200yds

Lapua brass
CCI primer
Sierra 85 hpbt
42,4 gn of H4350
2,649 COAL (far away from the riflings)

I tried many loads around 42 grains, with 80 to 87 gn bullets, without success (around 0,75 to 1 MOA)
Then pretty much at the same time I changed the butt stock, I decided to back off the bullet

I am really happy with my actual setup!

Cheers!

I love the 243 and is probably the most versatile caliber out there. Years ago I would have said Tikka or go home. Getting older, having kids, etc makes one look at actual value on the performance cost curve. Having said that, a Savage 12 model will not disappoint.

All of your options are great, if your looking to do some customizing down the road, the model 700 is the way to go. Tikka and Savage both, aren't far off either. I honestly don't think you can go wrong with any one of those 3. Ive owned all 3 at one point, (not all 243) but they all shot SUB MOA with my handloads.

Check out prophet river in Lloydminster AB. (theyre a supporter of this site as well) They have lots of stocks and aftermarket toys for firearms, but also have a pile of rifles in stock, and their prices are on par with others.

Prairie Gun Traders in Avonlea, SK. They also support this site, and Darren and his crew are top notch to deal with as well.

Wolverine Supplies in Virden, MB. They support this site, have piles of options for everything from firearms to chassis's, stocks etc. Very good customer service as well.

I would agree that these little Rugers are nice rifles. I replaced the plastic with a nice Ruger walnut stock on my M77 Mk2 stainless 243 win. The trigger needed work too but it turned out real nice in the end.
