My bro in-law in NB is thinking of getting a varmint rifle. He needs a .22 I'm thinking. Any recommendations? He is not far from The Gun Dealer in Macadam, he has a large wood lot so it will be for shooting on his own land, he's not a hunter.

Thx

In NB you can buy a varmint license and use anything .22 caliber or smaller, in that case, i would go as big as legally aloud, get a .223 or 22-250.

As for what kind of rifle, depends on his budget. buy used, synthetic stainless. Get something durable with the least maintenance.

A .22 rimfire might be a good place to start if your brother-in-law has limited shooting experience, although you don't say if that's the case. You said he's thinking of getting a varmint rifle rather than target rifle, so I assume there are some critters on his land he needs to trim down, even though he is not a hunter. While a .22 LR is fine for small stuff, a step up to a .22 Magnum is appropriate if the critters he intends to shoot are say fox size. If coyotes are a problem, I'd prefer a centerfire rifle, in which case a CZ 527 in .223 would be a nice walking varmint rifle.

If the ranges are short to medium, a fixed 6X compact scope will work, although a variable like a 4-12X has certain advantages. If he leaves it set on 12X though, chances are he'll miss shots on critters that are moving or at close range.

Kind of depends on what varmints being hunted, and the various distances shots will be taken. A little more info will help to recommend what rifle and caliber to use.

Again...if it's 22 rimfire cost vs accuracy...get a savage
if it's 223 or 22 250 cost vs accuarcy.... get a savage
I like cz ...they are a beautiful gun ..but the cost vs the disfference in accuracy is not high enough to justify..
buy the savage...spend the money on good rings and a scope
especially if he is starting out!

As others have stated ...
what is the itended range?
What is the budget?
What kind of 22.... rimfire or centrefire?
What are his anticipated ammo costs?
These things make night and day differences in opinion/reccomendations of your fellow cgner's and would go a long ways to help in giving you the most accurate/usefull advice for your particular situation!

OK, His experience is limited, this will be his first rifle other than air guns. Short range, racoons and similar. The wood lot is fairly dense with undergrowth, so <100m max. He's thrifty but will spend $ on quality, I'd say under $300 for now.

A used Savage Axis package or Stevens 200 would fit your friends needs nicely if he could extend up to the $500 range.

I`d buy a Savage93R .22MAG

Bit more killing power for coons and such. I`d still shoot a coyote and fox with it at under 150 yards. (under 100 preferred). If it is going to be mostly coyotes, Step up to a .223 or .22-250. Fun shooting coon sized game with the .22-250. The pink mist lets you know you got em!

Given his experience and his shooting requirements, a .22 rimfire is his best option IMHO. Given his modest budget, a Ruger 10/22 would fill the bill.

.22 magnum might be more down his alley if its racoons and similar varmints. As for gun, keep a close eye on the EE for one. Ammo is cheaper then centerfire rds. And they are fun to shoot!

Id say look into a 17hmr. Fun little gun to shoot. I shot a raccoon not to long ago with it and it had no problems taking it down.

300 dollar budget is tight, I would highly recommend the 17 HMR, I picked one up a couple years ago and basically haven't fired my 22s since. It is superior to the 22 in every single way out to 100-125 yds and anything you would shoot with a 22 you can kill better with the 17. I has definitely become my darling of the rimfires, and I own several in 22, 22 mag and the 17 and I can tell you the 22s aren't getting worn out at all !!!

For a guy with limited experience shooting at animals I wouldn't recommend anything smaller than a .223. Too many chances of wounding and suffering needlessly.

"The holder of a varmint licence shall only hunt with one of the following: A rim-fire or centre-fire rifle of less than .23 calibre."

I have one of these in 17hmr. Best it shoots is 1.5" at 100 yards. Was hoping for better. I even glass bedded it and tried all the ammo out there.

I've got the Browning T-bolt RoA and it doesn't do much better, I haven't tried all the ammo yet but it still kills 95% of what I put the crosshairs on, and they are only varmints after all............
