Looking for a decent scope for varmint rifle. Any recommendations?
Don't want a cheapo, but not something I have to remortgage the house to buy :p
Shots could be from 100 - 400+ yds.

What kind of varmints do you shoot and what is your price range? I like Leopolds because of their warranty. You could pick up a VXIII 4.5-14 or 6.5-20 for just under $1000, or the VXII line comes in 4 - 12 or 6 - 18 models for just under $700.

I have an older Burris 4 - 12 with a fine plex reticle on my .222 that I really like. I find that it's good for small critters like gophers out to about 250 or so, but much past that they seem really small. Since 250 is about the effective range of the .222 it works for me. I'd probably want more magnification if I had a longer range rig, but 12 X would be OK on coyotes out past 300 yards or so.

You have a lot of choices for good glass, depends on how much you want to spend.

Bushnell Elite 4200 or the older 4000 series.

Superb optics, great turrents and tracking, work with muzzle brakes. Great value. Used would still be in your price range.

Second would be the new Gen Nikon Buckmaster. Great optics, mechanicals and price. I used the 4X14SF w/mil dots. The 6X18 I saw had similar qualities.

Still leary about Simmons.
