I’ve been shifting scopes around on a number of rifles. I like 6-24 or similarly powered scopes. I have an 8-32 on one 243. My 17 Rem is sitting with a 3-9 that’s ok (Leupold). What are you using? What are your pics. Thanks

For gophers, crows, magpies, and other small vermin- 5-25X/6.5-20X/6-24X etc. since they're small targets.

For coyote guns I generally go lower, in the 4-16X/4-12X/3-18X range, as I've had enough sub-20 yard shots on surprised coyotes that I don't like having too high magnification. And I don't turn the zoom up until I'm ready to take a long poke, otherwise I just leave it on the lowest power.

Athlon Ares ETR 4.5-30X56... 34mm scope. ED glass. In the summer and little steel targets, it has really helped me separate and resolve what I need to shoot at even with high amounts of mirage.

You can of course spend more but gains will be small vs the $$$ spent.

Really enjoying ED glass.

Jerry,

Can you comment on the actual magnification range you use? I’m interested in a quality scope but am concerned about over-scoping. I sometimes wonder if people actually use all that magnification. Obviously the physical size goes up. Is it worth it?

If someone was shooting up to 1000M on steel, or 400M on gophers would you be inclined to recommend a Midas Tac in 4-16X, or the Ares ETR in 3-18X?

I have a Redfield Revo 4-12 on a 700 sporter 223 and am getting a Leupold 12x fixed for my 700 Varmint 222.

The 700 sporter 6CM is topped with a Leupold 4.5-14 but will be more of deer rifle than a varminter.

Was at the range today doing load testing on a new 22 Creedmoor... had the scope cranked to 30X. 190yds.

When I compete in PRS, I am around 12 to 16X most of the time but on some prone stages with small targets, I can crank to around 24X

I was going to run at 4.5X for the speed portion of the x/22 match but put on a red dot instead. I can engage steel inside 20yds at 4.5X but field of view relative to this game is smaller then I would like..... so red dot it is.

I love the Ares ETR 4.5-30... I can use it for short range stuff at low mag or full mag for punching paper.

If you can afford the better glass found in the Ares ETR, I would strongly recommend you get that... but be warned that once you enjoy ED glass, it will be hard to go back to reg lenses.
