So I picked up a lovely PCMR Winchester 94 today. The problem is that it has a varnished stock. I don't want to ruin the finish on the near perfect wood and I don't want to compromise the C broad arrows. I need the help of the CGN braintrust.

Oh yeah, I also need a front sling swivel band if any of you have one.

It's been sanded already before being varnished.

Get an old toothbrush, a bottle of BLO, and a bottle of Circa 1855 furniture stripper from Cambodian Tire, or Poly Suppa Strippa Gel also works well.

Take the furniture off the gun and use the toothbrush to apply stripper to the wood. Let it sit a few seconds then scrub the stripper into the wood with the toothbrush to assist in dissolving the varnish. Do a little at a time and wipe away frequently with a paper towel. Keep going until it's all scrubbed away. You will not need to sand it or anything. At the end, rub it all down vigorously with an old piece of denim or burlap or coarse cloth to lightly burnish the surface and clean away any residue you missed.

Next let the stock dry for a few hours and then hand-apply a thin coat of BLO to the wood. Let it sit for 15 minutes, then buff it off with a clean cloth. Let it sit over night to dry, then repeat the BLO application exactly the same way. Rub it in hard with your palm so the wood heats up a little and helps to polymerize the oil. Do this once a day for a week, once a week for a month and once a month for a year.

Ta-Da! you will have a perfect period-correct finish.

Well, I took the plunge and did it. I was really worried that I would ruin the finish under the varnish but I would say that 90% of it remained. Thanks for the help.

This is what I used. I got it from Canadian Tire and it has little to no smell. I used it in my workshop with no ill effects to me or the metal of the rifle.

On your last pic, the forend at the receiver top of wood down 1/8" to 1/4 inch you will see a black line extending on a horizontal
line be very careful that is dry wood and prone to cracking.
With old guns if you are going to refinish oiled or other you need to get some moisture back into strengthen it and there are various ways

Very nice job!

It looks like that environmentally friendly stripper worked nicely too. Much nicer to use than that stuff I have that even attacks you through rubber gloves...

Not sure why, but those pics are not coming through.

Is it Photobucket? That site is glitchy as hell lately.
