Just curious to know those who own custom 7-08 with 24" barrels; what velocities have you been able to obtain with 140 and 150 spitzers.

Yours in good hunting,

Sheep1

I have gone 3000 ft/+ with 26" barrels safely.

That being said, I never settle on the highest velocity load, I settle on the MOST accurate.

24" With 140 , 2800-2900 ft/sec you will fall in, 150's obviously a bit less, 2700-2750 I anticipate will be your sweet spot based on experience.

Typically I have found that for every inch of barrel you can see 10-30 about ft/sec increase/decrease , it really does vary and isn't as much as many would suspect.

Powders? Twist ?

I shoot 140's with my 7.08 (Wby VGII 24" bbl) and only load with Varget - not overly adventurous, it's a hunting rifle.

I can get velocities up in the mid 2800 range but find my most accurate loads (partitions and a-frames is what I choose to shoot) are in the lower 2700's (39.5 grains of Varget).

In my m70 with h4350 and 140's it will do over 2900 fps in a 22" it was about 3050 with 120's and varget. In my opinion if you shoot 140's at less then 2850 it is almost a waste. Load it to what it can really do

I agree with you, I do not understand the desire to have the most speed. Where we are in a game where accuracy is truly most important versus arriving on target some hundreds of a second later.

Some folks like accuracy only, some other velocity. I like both!

I was able to push the 140's at 3050 with RE17 and the 150's at 2900 with the same powder. They are warm loads but not hot; no sticky bolts, shiners or enlarged primer pockets.

In my Browning BBR 24" barreled 7/08 I get 2898 ft/sec with the Speer 145 gr SBT over a max load of WW 760. Under MOA accuracy. Great load.

I have a custom Rem700 with a 1-9 twist giallard barrel (all Stainless)@ 24".. I shoot 150 Swift SciroccoII and 160gr Sierra Gamekings.. and am currently have test loads with 139gr GMX's.
The powder i use is IMR4007SSC which i find is a sleeper in this cal just like RL17.
the 150 I have travelling @ 2800FPS in Hornady Match Brass and Rem 9 1/2 primers.
the 160's are going 2650 in Remington Brass and Rem 9 1/2 Primers.

All loads shoots 1/2 MOA. i guess i got lucky has these are my hunting/ plinking loads and ended up my max loads were the most accurate.

Cheers
Josh

I was at the range yesterday getting 2990-3015 fps w/ 139 gr Hornady's over IMR 4895. I'd have to go check the charge, but it would have been around 43gr. That's in a 24" Wby Vanguard. No pressure signs.

That sounds good. Never tried that powder. What is its burn rate? Your load with that powder and the 150 SCII; is that a compressed load? I have tried RE 17 and H4350 and the 150 SCII. I just can't get it to group to my expectation.

My current load is 48.3 grains of RE 17 and 150 NPT at 2,900 fps (24" Lilja #2 barrel_chambered long) in to a 3/4 MOA and is a proven load. Its just that I love the SCII and believe it is the best hunting bullet in the market.

Cheers,

Alex

Josh;

Have you seen this?

Yes i have seen this thanks.. I bought ALOT of IMR4007 i liked it so much... 16 pounds i think.... cant remember.. 6 pounds of it was part of the recall so I got a nice Cheque from Hodgdons.
Hodgdon lists 4007SSC right beside H380 for a burn rate.. it was originally designed for the 22-250 but i find it Works alot better in the 7-08, 30-06 and 338-06 then any of my 22-250... it gave me excellent accuracy but not the velocity wanted or listed in the 22-250.
As for a compressed load yes it is.. but not much
