I was looking into CCI website and notice that they say VELOCITOR 22LR is "Up to large varmints like coyotes ".

 What you think?

You should have no problem shooting a coyote with them at 75yds or less PROVIDED you know the trajectory of your rifle and don't get fancy on the shot angle (Full frontal and broadside should be fine)!

While not the 22LR, I've seen the 22 Mag (standard ammo) used on 2 coyotes. One was with full jacketed bullet at @ 80yds frontal (coyote went down hard). The other was a HP on a broadside shot through the ribs at @ 85 yds (he too went down fast). There was certainly "power" to spare with the 22 Mag on those shots, and I can't see the CCI Velocitor giving much up at close range.

A buddy took one a few years ago at @ 125yds with a 22 LR Stinger through the ribs (broadside) and it dumped on the spot.

Keep the shots CLOSE and you're in business.

Having said that, it ain't my first choice for dog medicine!

The Velocitor will penetrate as far as solids in wet newspaper (14")and expand to .30cal with perfect wt retention. With a Semi-auto .22 you could probably hit a Coyote like 3 times at 40yds before it even knew what was happening. I would try it for sure.

Frankly, I'd want a more certain killing power. That being said, if my problem was packs of coyotes or feral dogs attacking my cows/sheep/etc, I might concider a 25 round mag full of Velocitors a satisfactory response. I don't like the idea of simply wounding the animals, but if the pack is large enough, I suppose the goal is to put as many out of commission as possible.

If I was hunting rabbits/hogs/crows/etc and a yote would come close enough (about 50 m) I'd take the shot.
I use Aquila Hyper Velocity, usually with solid points.

But if I was to pack for a day specially for coyotes, it would definately not be my choice.
Since I live in SW Ontario, I have to use something under 270.
And I do not own any 22 centerfire... it would be one of the swedes.... if I can get them to shoot how I want in time.

I have shot them with .22 and .22 magnum as well...it's not a good idea a .22 rimfire of any description is too light for coyotes in most circumstances. Certainly not adequate for coyotes in the 50-60 pound class.
When I am in tight and expect to be shooting inside of 75 yards... I use 3 1/2 inch heavy-shot or Buckshot... why would you even want to use a .22rf?
My preferred cal is .25 - .270.

Won't put down a yote!!! I've tried for fun at about 60 yds and he just looked at where I hit him and went back to eating the gophers! I also tried with a 17 hmr. He atleast jumped (about 150 yds) and ran, but went back to the spot to eat the gophers I just blown away!
A 22-250 would suffice but NOT the 22lr.

you sure you werent using a BB gun? i find it hard to believe that he would simply look at where the bullet hit and go back to eating. i figured it would have at least moved away due to the sound of the gun:confused:

ive heard alot of stories of people killing coyotes with a 17hmr, which will put them down under 100 yards. maybe you werent even hitting them?

Sounds like grade A, top shelf, 12 year old... BS. :)

@50 yards, a good 22lr will penetrate a 4x4 . Totally, not just barely.
A 60 grain would kill a yote @100 yards, but the SS will not cycle most 10/22s and you're talking about a lingering death, unless you hit CNS.

32 grainers are good up to 75 yards, but still not adequate for dogs.

It you hit any dog with as much as BB, he's not going to be around for much.
For reference, look up the money people spend to call them in....
If they were that stupid, they wouldn't make it in the top 10 hardest to hunt animals.

Same principal applies here as to any other 'minimum caliber'

Of course it will work. It leaves you NO ROOM WHATSOEVER for error, but if you can put it though the heart or lungs, it'll work.

A BETTER choice is a centerfire - more insurance, flatter trajectories for easier shot placement, less drift, more expansion & penetration, etc, etc.

Personally, I like 6mm's. Way more than usually needed, but gives the extra range and safety factor

 Ruger 10/22 with subsonics. I figured he'd take off too, but stayed put!

I've talked to people who have shot them with a 17hmr as well. I only had the 1 chance but will keep trying. (oh, and yes I did hit him:) )

I would use Stinger or Quick Shok, Higher Velocity / energy
At 100 yrds they have more velocity/energy than most HV at muzzle.

Stinger have less than 1inch trajectory deflection within 100 yrds.

Velocitor:
Velocity, ft/sec
Muzzle 50 75 100 yards
1435 1230 1149 1084

Energy, ft-lbs
Muzzle 50 75 100 yards
183 134 117 104

Stinger / Quik-Shok:
Velocity, ft/sec
Muzzle 50 75 100 yards
1640 1601 1582 1562

Energy, ft-lbs
Muzzle 50 75 100 yards
191 182 178 173
