I love this place! Thank you guys for your answers, they are all appreciated.
The reason I asked is because I've been wanting a guide gun for a couple of years now and the latest incarnation with full mag and laminated stock really strikes my fancy. However, I got the chance to handle one last weekend and although very pretty to my eyes, I felt the balance with the short barrel was a little odd.
My main reason for wanting this rifle is for "just in case when in black bear territory", so the short barrel is appealing. However, when I got home and checked the gun I've been using for that purpose, a Rem 870 with 20" barrel and 7 shot mag extension, I realized it was roughly the same length and weight as the 1895 Classic with 22" barrel. That got me thinking that if I would get higher velocities from a better balanced, not much less manageable package, I would go with the longer rifle instead. However, if all I would be loosing with the 18" barrel is roughly 100 fps, then the longer mag in the GG would be more appealing for my purposes.
It seems like now I'll have to go back to the store and let the rifles convince me of which one should be chosen. This will be my first Lever action and I will admit I much prefer the trimmer stocks on Winchesters, but at more than twice the price for a new 1886 in .45-70, I think the Marlin is my only choice for now.
Hey Camp Cook, which powder(s) are you using in those loads?
By the way, I know heavy loads will kick in the GG, but I am used to 180gr pills at 3,290 fps out of my .300 Wby and 300gr ones at over 2,400 fps out of my Savage 10ML, so I am hoping the GG won't be much worse.
Again, thanks everyone, I appreciate your answers!
