Velocity of .45-70 out of Guide Gun

Final step in loading my different 45-70 loads (actually all of my different loads) is I mark the primers with different coloured felt pens never have an issue with mixing up loads and I label the ammo boxes with masking tape with the load info and the colour.

I have a chrony and I never bothered checking my 45-70 loads as they are not all that heavy. For me its a 50 yard Black bear gun and If I find my mark with a 350gr.-500 gr. bullet the bear will not know the difference of a 100 fps or so. I guess I would be more concerned working up top end loads or trying to figure out the drop on 200 yard targets....but I got other Rifles for that.

Food for though: I was reading a piece on the garrett cartridges website and they claim that .458 bullet (solid) penetration is actually optimum at around 1500 fps .

Happy shooting

I basically copied Garret velocities with my 525gr/550gr loads.

My all round favorite bullet/load for everything that I could ever face with my Marlin 1895GS 45-70 are 350gr Swift A-Frames with 54grs H322, Win LR primers, crimped with 1 1/4 turn adjustment Lee Factory crimp die.

Using the XS Sights backup low Weaver ghost ring sights I can put 6 shots into 6" @ 150 yard.

I run high pressure loads in Nickel-plated brass and low-pressure stuff (ie Black Powder) in standard brass then label ther +P stuff as such. Then I store them in seperate locations. No matter what you do, you need a system when you run more than one rifle in a given cartridge.

I wouldn't be a bit surprised that this is right.
many years ago my brother shot an elk with a 45-70 Springfield Trapdoor, with old Winchester ammo with a 405 grain jacketed bullet. The velocity at the target was probably closer to 1200 than 1500, but he hit the elk at about a 45 degree angle and it completely penetrated and out through the far side hide.

I'd get the heaviest of the Marlin leverguns in 45/70 due to recoil and I'm thinking that the laminated wood ones are the heaviest, you'll thank me everytime you let loose a 500grainer at 1800+fps,,,,'cause you know you want too!! P.S. a bigger loop lever helps as well, this is one rifle where the loop is more then for show...IMHO

I just picked up a Win 1885 Highwall from Prophet. High end Miroku stuff and apparently solid as crap. I have heard it touted as one of the strongest mechs available. Looking forward to playing with this beast. Seems its like holding the
Hammer of Thor shooting a 4 or 500gr boolit loaded to 1800fps. Geez next thing up is a 12ga slug....I guess if its good enough for bison...And its a real old cartridge-dates back before Custer.

I have ss BLR in 450 Marlen but wish I would've got 45-70.
Maybe this year I will get the 45-70
when I first started shooting the 450 I found it to have a terrible kick but now I do not notice it at all.
So I have removed the lim saver and now I like it even more.

I'd have to agree with ya Ben!!

Get the Guide Gun. You won't have to worry about stopping power. I shoot 330gr hard cast with gas checks through mine at about 2200 fps. Yes, it kicks like hell but you get used to it. I shot a moose with that load while he was quartering away from me. The bullet hit him square in the front shoulder and came out just ahead of the rear leg on the opposite side.

I load a 450 grain Bullet Barn hard cast w/o gas check @ 1620 fps, Win brass and primers, 39.5g of H4198. I'm not sure what the limit is on cast w/o gas check but I'm thinking it's just past that point, maybe someone else can answer that. No terminal performance reports at this time:)

Garret penetration tests showed the best penetration from hard cast wide meplat bullets @ 1550fps - 1600fps that is why I load my 525gr/550gr WLNGC's @ 1600fps/1580fps respectively...
