A friend asked me to take photos of this Mauser he bought and put them on here to see what he had bought.

Rifle was built by FN, and has Venezuela written in the coat of arms on the receiver. I believe its in 7x57. Serial is in the 36800's. He's had it for about a year now and hasn't shot it, wanted me to figure out what rifle it is before he decided if its a shooter or safe queen.

Thanks!

It's a Venezuelan short rifle, Mauser Modelo 1930 made by FN in Herstal, Belgium. The majority of these were sold to Venezuela in the late 1940's. It should be in 7x57 Mauser.

These came to Canada through Century 15-20 years ago in, generally, unissued condition and are well made rifles.

Venezualan Mauser help?

Thanks guys. I'm sure he'll be happy to hear that Claven2 and desporterizer! The previous owner has shot it some but it doesn't even look like its had a sling on it. He says if its a safe queen he doesn't want to hurt its value any more by shooting it. It also came with a box that looks just like a transit case you'd see with like a No4T or something. Did they come with their own box? Are there any other pieces of kit he could collect to go with it? Bayo, sling etc? Also his cleaning rod is gone. Is there a specific length he should look for?

Wonder why the mods don't put up a what's it worth and what is it stickie for posts like this....

Thanks!

It's actually a 24/30 short rifle. The Venezuelans got their first order in the mid 1930s of around 16500. They placed and received several more orders right up to 1939.

The FN made rifles were made up to be like their counterparts in Venezuelan service, the Czeck VZ24.

Nice rifle, fantastic cartridge.

They used to be quite common. Some like yours, were in excellent condition when they arrived.

They were separated from their bayonets and slings to increase profit.

Most of the bayos and slings I saw were quite rough. There were some nice ones though.

Most of these rifles, went to the US and to the firearms factories in the UK, where they were converted to sporters. If I recall correctly, Midland and Globe picked up the majority of them. They cleaned up the rifles that had decent metal and bores, then chopped the stocks. In the case of Globe, they sometimes removed the sights as well and installed commercial models.

They both scrubbed the markings on all of the receivers in some cases and drilled & tapped for scope bases.

Midland, went so far as to mill off the crests and charger guides. They did complete makeovers on the receivers and bolts. Actually made up some very nice sporters and installed new sporter stocks.

It didn't take very long for the available receivers to be used up and both Midland and Globe, went out of business. It didn't help matters that the UK and the rest of Europe were making their business to expensive to undertake.

Those are lovely rifles. In the condition yours is in, very uncommon.

Be careful with it.

There are bayonets and slings out there to fit them but you will have to pay a premium for them. If you're insistent (I would be) on the condition, it will be even pricier.

You also need a muzzle cover.

Thank you very very much. Muzzle cover, like a sight hood?

The bayonet would look just like a K98 bayonet? Is there anything as far as numbers or markings that will set them or their proper slings apart from others?

I'll go over to milsurps too when I get the chance to try and research it more. See if I can dig up photos of others and accessories.

Thank you so much for taking the time to reply and getting things rolling!

Guys, I may be able to acquire this rifle now. It still remains unfired by him and in the same condition as it was when the pics were taken. What are your guesses on value for it?

Seems like none I've seen photos of online have a front sight hood or differ from this one in any way. Prices I've found seem to range from $450 to $1300 in the U.S. But the high end was at a few 'optimistic' venders locations. What would be a fair price?

Polaris, if I offered him $700 for it do you think that would be current top dollar then?

Yes, that's very fair IMHO

look what I bought for 700 each 2 years ago:
