Does anyone in Canada do rib installs similar to Simmons ribs down in the United States? I would like to get a Winchester style rib put on my old model 12.

Same as struff55. I had some done years and years ago by Simmons in the US. They still do them but I am not aware of anyone in Canada
Sorry I could not be of more help

Try Jason Spencer at Gunco in Ottawa. He took over from George Pohle who had a large milling machine to install vent ribs the right way.

It's necessary to silver solder the posts onto the barrel and then set up in a milling machine with a long travel so the post tops and notches for the rib stock can be milled off in the same set-up.

Another option would be to get a poly-choke rib. They are attached with adhesive and you can order the rib for under $150 and mount it yourself. I believe Poly-choke still ships to Canada. The Poly-choke rib for the Winchester Model 12 is about the same height as the solid ribs on Winchester Model 12's but is not nearly as tall as the Simmons ribs or the ribs on the Model 12 Y series guns. I have installed the Poly-choke rib on three of my Model 12's and have been quite pleased. I was a little reluctant at first since the rib was fixed to the barrel with an adhesive; however, in the seven years since I installed them, they have not worked loose. If they do begin to let go, you can use a wire to strip them off and re-install. If you would like to see a photo of one on a Model 12, check out the Gun Dealer web site. There is Model 12 with a poly-choke and after market rib for sale in the used gun section. It is one of my Model 12's that I traded in on a Citori.

Thanks for the tips. I am now thinking about the poly choke option. Mike, can I ask, does it come with a ramp on the receiver or does the rib run off the joint between the barrel and receiver? Is it specific to the model or "grind to fit"?

There is no duck bill type ramp as you would find on a Model 12 Y series gun just the rib. The rib is relatively low like the solid ribs on Model 12 's so it does not require a ramp. The rib is specifically designed for the model 12 barrel. You may also have to specify the length. If you install it yourself, you will have to construct a jig to keep the rib from flexing while you fix it to the barrel. This can easily be made from a piece of scrap wood and some screws. The rib comes with installation instructions and the adhesive. The folks at Poly-choke are very helpful.
