Vent Rib

To be honest, it would be cheaper to buy a new barrel with the vented rib.

This x 2. Years ago I was in the sane boat. I ended up finding a gun with the barrel I was looking for and swapped the barrels and resold the gun with the my old barrel. Lost a few bucks in the process, but the loss was way less then what the cost would have been to either buy a barrel or have a rib added.

George Pohl at GUNCO in Ottawa used to do them but I doubt he is still at it. Try Precision Gun at King City ON. I had two done years ago by Simmons (Denver?) but now the shipping and exchange, regardless of paperwork, would likely be a deal breaker. Please let us know if you find a Canadian source.

Ol' Flinter, Just out of curiosity can you remember what a Simmons rib would cost, and about what date it was done. I wonder if Simmons is still in the business?? I had a Win Mod 12 Skeet with a factory Simmons rib and it was well done. D.H.

Simmon's installed a vent rib on my 12 ga Model 12 hunting gun about 1969 and then about 1976 I had them put a vent rib on a custom made 410 skeet barrel I had built up to look like a 20 ga for my Rem 1100 skeet gun. After that I built another 410 barrel for skeet but had George Pohl at GUNCO in Ottawa install it. The latter was a Simmons rib also but installed by GUNCO probably under some special arrangement with Simmons.

As for cost, I think the first one was a bit less than $100 but the last two were upwards of $200 each.

Simmons did a lot of ribs for Winchester Model 12 Trap and Skeet guns - I never saw a poorly installed example - they were uniformly excellent.

I was redoing a M-12 20 ga. years ago. At that time no one in Canada that I could locate would install a vent rib that was soldiered on. Everyone I found wanted to epoxy on an aluminum one. kept running into dead ends on this one so I ended up buying a Browning M-12 in Grade V for less than what a rib would have cost sending it into the USA and return. George Pohl rebuilt a M-12 for my Grandfather over 40 years ago, he does gorgeous work. I had no idea he was even still alive let alone still plying his trade.
