Ventilation for winter casting suggestions

She was smelling your flux, rather than the lead, I figure. Smoke is easy to smell.

Hello,

OP here. Thank you for all the great ideas. I installed ventilation in my garage a couple of days ago. Basically copied yomomma’s set up with a bathroom fan and a dryer vent through the wall. I planned to use a garage door exhaust port, but the dryer vent is much cheaper and easier to install.

I used a 70 CFM bathroom fan and it draws well, clearing smoke from a smoldering paint stick easily. Found a 270 Win mold from a fellow CGN’r and have already put this system to good use.

Don't forget to allow the equivalent CFM's of make up air into the garage (or shed)as your fan and duct is rated to.
A leaky garage door should work or one that is slightly raised.
 
Can is correct. You must have a source of fresh air coming in our you can't exhaust out. Mind you there are not many houses around that are not leaky enough to accomplish this.
 
Being the redneck that I am I put a tarp wall around my casting area in the garage and use a small electric heater when below 0 degrees to heat the area. Bought a propane buddy heater also for really cold days.
Tarp will be removed and put away for the summer..5 minute job.

Sorry have to ask you are melting lead in a confined area with no ventilation? Don't get me wrong I did that for years when I was younger, so I really cant say much. As well I really think lead has a bad name, plumbers used lead pipes for years with no problems but I still believe some ventilation make me fell better.

I am setting up an oven vent over my casting area, till now have just been keeping a window opened slightly. The vent will do a better job and hopefully keep more heat in.

Rite on, I love lead but want it in my guns not in my blood haha. just a quick suggestion it works for me in the garage I use a dryer vent hose and have and inline fan, and have built a small hood out of thin sheet metal tied it to the top of my pot with wire instead of a big oven fan. couple reasons easy to store, I hate noise inline fans are super quite, as well as keep the heat in my garage , lastly princess auto has cheap ones for maybe $15 bucks.
