Thinking of buying a non-restricted short barrel semi for general shooting, not for competition. The 1301 Tactical has been around for a long time and has a track record of being an excellent gun in terms of reliability, accuracy and "handling". The Canadian version of the Versa Max R12 is quite new and does not have a lot of reviews. However, its 5 shots of 3.5" shell is a nice feature.

Which one would you choose and why?

I have a 1301 tactical 2 generation with removable chokes amazing shotgun never had any problem with any load from the start. Very light but reasonable kick,i like the versamax but I prefer the 1301

Same here my beretta 1301 g2 runs like a top, even with cheap target loads

I have run just about every semi platform, and aside for an aesthic love for some, the 1301 is the finest platform in my opinion. Light, soft recoiling, and you simply can't outrun it.

Both are excellent guns. The R12 Versa max is heavier and is softer shooting. The 1301 is quite a bit lighter.
If it is a range fun gun, I would choose the R12. If I had to carry it a lot, then the 1301 is hard to beat.

I've also been going back and forth on these two shotguns. Is the rail and rear ghost ring shroud made of plastic on the 1301?

If I could find the Aimpoint CROM and Nordic extension kit for the 1301, this would be a lot easier!

TacOrd typically has both in stock. ;) If they're not in stock, they will be on order. Speaking of the CROM, I recommend getting one with the Rob Haught mod. it is worth the few extra bucks in my humble opinion.

Enjoy the new 1301! I'm sure you will love yours as much as I love mine!

The rear ghost ring sight is made by LPA and is all metal. The rail on the gen 2 guns is aluminum, polymer on the gen 1. But if you go with the CROM, none of this really matters I guess. lol

Thanks for the intel, this makes the decision a helluva lot easier!

Just got my 1301 last week. Took it out this past week and it was fantastic. It’s unbelievably fast, no way you’ll ever outshoot it. Great all around shotty.

K, pulled the trigger! I told my wife it was your fault..

The 1301 should make a great hiking companion!

That's awesome! Congrats! Seeing as you are now down the rabbit hole, might I also suggest the Aridus Industries ASA-1301 stock adapter and a Magpul SGA buttstock to accompany it? Not at all necessary as the 1301 is a great handling and great shooting gun on its own, but the Magpul really finishes the gun nicely. ;)
