Is it possible to get a vertical grip for my M4-style AR without getting a new handguard with rails. I currently just have the stock plastic handguard.

If so, which vertical grip would suit my needs and how would it mount?

Junk, putting a vert grip onto a standard hand guard is not recommended, nor is it safe. The extra torque that can be placed on the hand guard by using a vert grip can/will cause it to pop off during a string of fire causing you to lose control of the firearm.
Anyone who would sell a device like this needs to rethink their business practices.
Save your pennies and get a proper hand guard system that locks securely to the firearm.

I've seen plenty of handguards come off...as well as stupid bolt on rails fall off in the middle of patrols overseas. Yes, the bolt on rail is the CF solution and it blows too. Reaper is 100% correct....save your money and get a proper system.

Has anyone had this happen to them? My handguards are a b1tch to remove, I just can't see how they would pop off. Please share if you've experienced this.

I have seen no less than a dozen hand guards pop off with these idiotic bolt on rails and standard hand guards in a 3 month span, they are a safety hazard and should not be sold for use on real firearms.

Ditto to Reaper -- we experimented with the C9 grip (as they had been junked from C9's) and it was a dismal (and unsafe) failure.

The CF took an el cheapo aproach to doing buisness when for about $250 they could have gotten our RAS's in the mil kit with a vert grip. Which the rest of the world does to their M16FOW system...

I too have seen hand guards come apart due to torque (in the field). We were told not to add VG's on our weapon systems during my tour (unless you had a rail system). I ended up removing my vert grip from my rifle.

just doing drills with the C7 is enough to crack handguards. I have broken at least 2 while I was "in" by doing just that in garrison, not in the field. One of which was sent flying into the face of buddy next to me.

The point is, they are hard to get out if you do it the right way. If they crack or split down the middle, they are not very solid.

Don't cheap out and get a real rail. Its only an extra 100$ but the moment you add something after your vertical grip you will essentially be saving money. For instance, a decent optic.
