Vertical Hand Grips, are they useful

Was at an event recently, and had the opportunity to fire a couple of AR's with Vertical Grips. I gotta say, I wasn't impressed. The whole system seemed to screw with the stability of the firearm. Is it just me, or is their some magical quality to these that I am just not getting?

Once you get used to them, they work well.
fast movements to being on target are one of the benefits.

And in CQB situations they flick very fast since you don't need your whole shoulder to move to line up.

When it gets fired a lot and things are hanging on the handguard, a vertical grip is needed.

Ok you guys have convinced me! Where can I get mine for my Bushmaster? I currently have stock handguard.

The Shooting Edge has both Tango Down Full Size and the Tango Down Stubby Grip in Stock.... very good to deal with, great communications and theyshipped same day I ordered so I got the item very quick.

Isn't that what the magwell is for? ;)

Personal comfort and sizing will affect how much of a factor ....

However, in general it is much easier to bring up your rifle with a forward grip up front than driving it up from the mag well.

How far front will be determined by the operator.

I was a mag well user for years, in the last two years though I have been using the vertical grip without fail, now it is just natural. The K grip is better for handgun transitions and shooting from awkward positions in addition to accessing accessories such as lights or aiming devices. For me (YMMV) the K-grip held with "thumbs up" makes checking the chamber when the gun stops working (from running out of rounds) then twisting for a mag change a lot easier. It is also a lot steadier when shooting supported around barriers and cover during gun games. Credit needs to go to the "Subdued Patch" who opened my eyes to the proper use of the K-Grip which until then was a fashion accessory. Like most things, the K-Grip as "A Way" not "The Way".

The "thumbs up" grip on the vertical grip was used by Todd Jarrett in gun games with an AR, which was virtually an extension of his handgun grip.
The "K-grip" looks interesting....are you locking your thumb up and over, rather than pointing it straight forward for natural pointing?
The only "downside" (and it's really being picky) to using a vertical grip rather than the magwell grip is a slightly slower mag change cycle, as the left hand has further to travel.
Gamers....yeah....I know. :D

Six, I put my thumb up and over when using the K-grip(vert grip) it allows a lot more dexterity when controlling the front of the gun. As for the speed with mag changes I find that when using the mag well I have a natural tendency to "strip" the mag away with my weak hand then go for the spare mag. When using the K grip I chamber check...twist the gun while depressing the mag release (this usually violently ejects the empty mag) while simultaneously going for my spare mag...for me this is faster...though I am still no match for a Veteran Tommie.;)

That's interesting....I'll try it. No worries about being faster than this old crock these days...Although I'd die trying before I'd let you young fekkers beat me in a gun game. :D
Quite honestly, the only use I've found thus far for the vertical grip is as part of my tactical light system. Hold the vertical grip and operate the clicker switch on the tac light with my thumb.
I'm still undecided if I have more/quicker control over my AR's muzzle using the VG over the magwell hold. There's no doubt that my Dlask boat anchor 16" HB slows me down. Say...you don't happen to have a spare M4 profiled 16" barrel laying around do you? :)
