Is it legal to drive to your hunting area, or within your hunting area or anywhere else (other than somewhere with a prohibition) with your rifle unloaded, untriggerlocked beside you on the seat..

I do it lots,... usually have the bolt out, but when it's the lever action, ...action open and that's it..

I was questioned on it yesterday and told I was wrong. It must be cased, or trigger locked...

Legal by federal law, may not be legal by provincial hunting regulations.

By federal law, you can have your unloaded unrestricted firearm in your lap and the ammo clenched in your teeth and drive through town or anywhere else and it's legal.

In Sask its legal. Ive been pulled over by Co's and RCMP with a rifle on the seat next to me and a mag on the dash. LEO's were more concerned with my German Shorthair Pointer barking at them then the rifle. Never been asked if the guns registered either.

Cheers!!

SHort answer is above..

Long answer is consult your provincial hunting regs for further restrictions, as some provinces are dumb and make you case your rifle at night or be ghey in other ways...

I have been stopped by GRC and was told it should be trigger locked and in a case , but when I asked them to show me where it said that in the rules and regs they changed the topic and told me to have a good evening. It is just something they would like to see and personally can't really blame them in a way.

ha: That's awesome!

Every so often the RCMP works with the COs here to put up roadside checks. Been through a number over the years, coming home from hunting, rifle at my side, bolt open. They only want to know that it's not loaded. Never have suggested it be transported in case or with trigger lock.

When I head out to the rifle range I cart them the same way.
