Picked up a love for simplicity of the Remington 700 from my father but of course mine are newer models or custom builds.

Have not done too much research on the early offerings of this very popular rifle.

Some of you seasoned guys have got to have some nice older pieces, knowledge of them and stories/memories of using them.

Today there are many comments about the 700 in both directions (good/bad). I still find them to be solid and reliable... but maybe some of the romance is gone. Know I've handled and shot some old ones as a kid but have no specific memories of their details.

Anyway, I'd be interested and appreciate anything you guys got on the very old 700's !!

The thing to remember about first models of anything is, they didn't leave the factory in optimum condition. Yes, the company shipped safe rifles, but decades of subtle continuous improvements have made the 700 better.

I bought my first M700 rifle in 1963, a 30-06 ADL, and I have owned several of those "early" 700 rifles.
[Several still had the cutaway at the rear of the action top, like the 721/722s]

I had one with a 20" barrel in 30-06....shot a huge northern moose with it in the 60's. I found them to be accurate, very functional rifles.

But the early models lacked the bolt guide, which is a nice addition. [slot in the RH bolt lug that mates with the action rail]
There have been several subtle mods, which have, for the most part, been positive. I am not fond of the newer Xmark pro triggers, though.

I still possess a stable full of 700's, and don't see my leanings changing dramatically, despite the naysayers out there. If I intend to build a custom, the 700
will likely be the platform I start with.

That being said, I have acquired several Vanguards, and regard them with a lot of respect. I think they are a bargain, for the quality you get.

I am particularly fond of the 700 "Classics", and own a number of them. An older ADL is also in my stable, and it shoots sub-moa after thousands of rounds.

Regards, Dave.

Eagleye,

Good information. I was curious about the early changes form guys who have used them. Whether they were all real improvements or not.

Have to agree on the x-mark pro trigger. That was a step backwards imo. My only 700 with an x-mark is being swapped out with a Trigger Tech asap.

Have to agree, despite the naysayers the 700 is still a good choice.
